Its cool if you don't like Dan Hicks, I don't particularly like Tull. But I thought the thread was about underrated work. Tull was never underrated in their time. I seem to recall they sold out everytime they played in Chicago in the 70's.

1000a

true Tull from Aqualung on were a smashing success and Hicks/ Bromberg and the like were well below the popular radar.  Although at the time of "Stand Up" Tull  were still well below the radar.

a band I really like that I do not think ever had a really big following is the Blasters.

to this day in his solo career Dave Alvin (of the Blasters) is an incredibly good song writer (the critics love him- but the fans are limited) as is Peter Wolf (former J Giles Band) both of these guys seem way too far below the radar for their contributions.

but a lot of great music is overlooked all the time, its just very strange when say Peter Wolf is overlooked considering the popularity of his band in the day, reaally I guess its not that strange there are other band creators who go on infact grow considerably in their art (read for me better) but loose a substantial chunk of their audience.

I'm not great with album names but some rock bands I've known about for years and kinda rediscovered have been Uriah Heep and Thin Lizzy. Some of the stuff they did was way cool.  :drums:

Hippies in tights, playing flute and standing on one leg...
Check out this clip from the 80s....Ian's thoughts on hippies  :D

I stand corrected! Good for you Ian, time to dig out Thick as a Brick! And as for you 1000a, Captain Beefheart as your first gig? Maybe you should have a cup of tea and a lie down. I have a copy of Trout Mask Replica, I think more people name check that album than actually listen to it. I find it pretty hard work to listen to, and I do like a challenge! It got me thinking, I might start a thread, first gig, first album

2bigears

 no kidding that Cd/lp is still not in my collection its like Ornette Coleman (yeah people have his stuff- the great historical contribution- can anybody digest it?) he makes Coltrane sound like 3 cord rock. knocking down the boundries does not make it create smiles.

I was finally gona order Trout but after that comment I can wait awhile----

OK back to the thread, I did not see Spirit listed

so anyone not having this, is definitly missed something outragously good

Spirit - 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus (classic rock probably not, progressive yeah) undeniable masterpiece.    use the sample player  third down the page, much better

If you like ELP, Yes, King Crimson- you will wonder how in the hell you missed this one :o

another incredible work overlooked is Captian Beyond-1st lp

Kenny Rogers and The First Edition
The Ballad of Calico

The music was composed by Michael Murphy and Larry Cansler, and Murphy also wrote the words.

How can you not like an album with these lyrics?

Oh Madame DeLil loved Diabolical Bill
She wanted to scare a man she couldn't quite kill,
So one night he was sleepin' and he closed his eyes
So Lil put blanks in his big forty-five
The next day when a big Swede insulted his pride,
He shot him down and said, "Damn your eyes."
He stole a horse and he left that town
He didn't know he never shot that man down.
And nobody railroads Madame DeLil
The joke was on Diabolical Bill
