A Gk1 for a GK1
« on: 1 Jun 2007, 02:21 pm »
hi I need help

I put this post also on other forums.

I have two Gk1's kits bought form Hugh ( of course)
they are the non remote version. i hope they are also the 220/230 volts version although I see on the two transformers 115 V rails, but i trust Hugh that they can be connected for 230 volts i suppose

I need someone to build one for me up to specs and regulate and test so one is in pristine order.*
I dont offer money, i offer the other kit. You can own one of the Gk-1s and build the other for me in exchange.

I cannot find the time to build one myself. For instance i need at least two different reading glasses! One for the work one for up close. My fingers has lost their delicate touch, i am getting out of the paradigm of the youth :(    ;)  My fingers do not feeble and sweeble yet...

IS this a fair exchange?

*Without enclosure, just build them on a wooden plank but consider this wooden plank as the "ceiling" part of the enclosure, the two tubes sticking out on top. The build enclosure format is the same as you see on other  retail tube amplifiers. The electronics are mostly connected to the top floor of the enclosure and the bottom floor is the one you can remove as a "lid" and see the complete innards

I live in Holland Europe. but the amp is not heavy i pay for the shipping costs from my place to yours and back.
I prefer a person who can handle the job and is a "high end DIY man and music lover. I you have building questions ask Hugh, not me. If you have already a GK-1 you can maybe build the other one for a friend :D

No need to worry about the trannies - they do "European" 240V as well, even though they were born in Australia

a VERY fair offer Kyrill

I am in the midst of building my GK-1 EL and have to say that hugh's explanation is top notch.  A dream for a DIYer with good soldering skills.  I'd offer but you probably want to have someone in a 220V country build yours though so they can test on that voltage... even then your particular voltage might vary and require a refinement, mainly changing resistors (Hugh has built in contingencies for varying voltages).

good luck... someone with a bit of time will be very happy - maybe Hugh can suggest a builder in the NL or neighboring country.

Kyrill,

I watched this thread with fascination!!  WOW, what a community we have here - thanks guys!

First, the GK1 can be configured for 110-120Vac OR 220-240Vac.  The trafos are universal and designed for 50Hz or 60Hz (in fact they work well down to 30Hz as they are grain oriented silicon steel).

Second, Rom is a magnificent builder, and he is an outstanding technician as well.  Kyrill, you are privileged;  Rom is a professional satellite technician working all over the world for the UN.  He is top drawer.  I have seen all his work in detailed photos, and he has been actively involved with me in developing certain of my products.  His use of perspex and other imaginative materials is astonishing, and I would suggest you offer him a little more to build the case as well because it will be stunning.  He knows the GK1 circuit like the back of his hand, there are few others here I would recommend over Rom.

On top of that, he's a lovely guy, with an inquiring mind and beautiful manners.

Thank you, Rom - who is presently in Italy, not too far from Nederlands.......

Cheers,

Hugh

Hi Kyrill

I'd be more than happy to build your GK-1.  I've be building audio stuff over the last couple of years and have long dreamed of a GK-1.  I guess it depends on your location as to what is easiest for you.

I also have some goodies that I have acquired over the last couple of years including silver wire and RCA sockets as well as some Vampire CC wire.  I have just ordered some 14 AWG CC wire from the States.  This has 96 strands of 36AWG wire and my idea is to strip the outer insulation off and use the strands for tonearm wire.  I have ordered just five foot of this stuff for about $10USD but this will give me quite a number of sets of tonearm wires and had intended to give some away to my audio friends as well as givig myself some great wire at a very low cost!

Cheers

Bluesky

PS I also have some chassis that might suit, I am very enterprising in getting good stuff cheap or even for free in some cases!

Hi Kyrill

I really must add that Rom leaves me in the dust with regards to the depth of his electronics knowledge, sheesh.....expertise in satellite technology!

I have an active reading program in electronics but the more I read the more it makes me realise just how much there is to learn!  This also leaves me in awe of EE people who are constantly "pushing the envelope" in electronics design.

This all brings me to the point of the readability of some books, it is a very rare bird who can write a text on electronics that is actually enjoyable to read (one such is Morgan Jones).  However I believe some authors should stick to being technicians rather than writers, we all have different skills but only a few of us can write well.  Just had to get that off my chest!

Hi Kryill,

You've made a good choice selecting this kit.  There is just something special about this component.

I managed to put mine together with almost no technical knowledge.  However, I could solder, identify components, follow instructions, and had previously built a 55N+.

All up, it was about 35 hours work.  The case work proved to be quite challenging.

In summary, I wouldn't recommend this kit for a raw beginner, but you don't need too much technical knowledge to successfully construct a GK-1M.

My efforts are described here:

Hi Kyrill,

Thank you for your compliment.

I only offer to help. I'm not really interested for any payment.
You can pick somebody else to build the modules for you.
My offer to make the case still stand but I will need a lot of details from you
about what you like and what I can built. Its a bit labor intensive as these are all build from scratch.

Hi Bluesky/Hugh,

Thanks for the the kind words, I do not consider myself expert in Sat Tech, I still have a lot to learn.

Cheers
Rom
