Exodus Audio Loudspeaker Kits -- The Future
« on: 26 Mar 2007, 01:34 pm »
I just want to clarify where we are going with the Exodus Audio Loudspeaker lineup.   In general there is some long-term concern with the supply of the Adire Audio Extremis.   The Extremis has been the foundation for our first generation of loudspeaker kits and without it we wouldn't have a loudspeaker line.

As luck would have it, we have been working on a replacement transducer design for the last eight months.   The new driver is the Exodus EX-6.5 and shares many of the design features of the Adire Audio Extremis including XBL^2 motor design, class-leading linear BL curve, extremely low inductance and massive output for its form factor.  The Exodus EX-6.5 also offers some new design features including, higher sensitivity, improved cooling/power handling, phase plug, treated paper cone and many cosmetic improvements.    The EX-6.5 will be the foundation for our new loudspeaker designs.

We also have plans for an Exodus Audio tweeter that will be utilized in the new generation Exodus Audio Loudspeaker kits.   Engineering details will be released once we have final production details.   Rest assured, this is not  your typical tweeter.   The EX-Tweet will offer many ground breaking design features much in the same way that our EX-6.5 midwoofer provides unique and compelling features.

Our goals for the costly development of our own transducers has two motives.   First, working with industry engineers we where confident that we could offer some unique designs that offer true performance benefits over what we could source in off the shelf transducer designs.   Second, we felt very strongly that the only way to be 100% confident in our ability to support our customers long-term was to design and source our own drivers.   When drivers are sourced through a third-party your dependent upon other companies to monitor production quality, and continue to provide support.   By sourcing drivers from reliable build-houses that have decades of history we are better able to control long-term supply of our products.   It allows us to assure our customers of long-term support for their purchases and provides us with better control over our supply of product.

We don't have immediate concerns with our supply of Extremis & WR-125s for the current loudspeaker line.   There is supply that should last well into the transition period of our new loudspeaker kits.    But if you have been planning the purchase of one of the current designs I'd not delay.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.    There is some really cool things going on over the balance of this year.   I'm stoked!

Very interesting.  I'm excited to see what you have planned for us, Kevin.

I'm wondering whether your above post means or implies that you'll be using a build-house other than Adire for these drivers.

I'm also wondering whether or not your above post implies that Extremis supplies will be drying up in general.  It'd be nice to have a spare or two around, I'm wondering whether I should pull the trigger.

Adire doesn't build the Extremis.   The build-house I'm using for these is a new vendor but they build the RS Series drivers and they have a long history of working with high-end designs.   I could build drivers here but it doesn't make sense.   The companies who do it full-time have better equipment, manufacturing knowledge and Q/C in place.

I'm not implying, I'm saying with 90% certainty that the supply of Extremis will be gone.  I hope that isn't the case but that is the way things are developing.

I won't get into all the reasons, but it leaves a number of us in a bind and not able to supply customers with replacement parts and continue product lines.   It is part of the reason I'm sourcing all my own drivers direct from build-houses.    I can do all the design (with some help from other specialist), Q/C on all production runs to make sure they all meet specification, I control long-term supply and I also have been able to design EXACTLY what I want in terms of designs goals/objectives.   This way I'll always be in control of what we get, publish as parameters and I make all the engineering choices (all about making the right trade-offs).

If you couldn't tell I'm a little bit of a control freak.    :)

You should be in control... this is not only a passion but your livelihood.

That is true.... making a living is important.   What strikes closer to my motives is control over what I put out the door and how I support my product.   If you analyze how much money I've made off of loudspeaker kits it has been a poor investment by almost any standard.

Long-term I hope it will make money but the reality is that very few loudspeaker companies are financially successful.  Most people are involved purely for the passion side of the equation.

Kevin:

I, for one, am happy that you're in the speaker business.

Without fail, everyone that visits our home and listens to your speakers remarks about the quality of the sound.

This holds true for both the Exodus 61 pair currently on HT duty and the Exodus 2641 pair on music duty in my listening room.

If your new designs present the same sort of giant leap forward in sound quality for the dollar that your first generation designs provided, people would be crazy not to consider your speakers.

I look forward to seeing and hearing your next generation,

Karl

Kevin... you're a good man. I hope this is a success.

BTW, how's the little one adapting to this country? He's been here for what, a year now?

Time flies, Tamerat has been here for almost two years now (in July).   He is 13 years old so he isn't so little.   He grew an inch a month for the first six months we had him.   :o And people say the American diet is poor.

You may be thinking of Abel.   Abel was just a little guy when we got him.   We don't know exactly how old he is because he was abandoned as a baby.    We gave him a July 10th birthday though and he is going to be four in July.   He was sick for the first year we had him so he is a little guy.   He didn't gain weight until we managed to solve his ear infections.    The kid had goop coming out his ears for the first year of his life and we where worried he had permanent hearing damage.   The doc says he is all clear though and he shows no sign of hearing loss.

and

Has anyone made that you know of any dipole surrounds with the the older kits? Thats what I would like, but I dont have a clue on how to design crossovers. :D

There isn't an older design with them but they are on the list for the new kits.

Wow...2 years! Time does fly. It's good to hear they're doing so well with you. Too bad Abel had it a little rough for a while but it sounds like he's doing well. The bugs here must be just as bad for them as bugs where they came from are for us. That's crazy that Tamerat grew so much so quickly... you must be fattening him up nicely :D.

The kid isn't fat that is for sure.   He is our star soccer player.   The coaches all fight to have him on their team and the high school coach has been saying he should go to some soccer camps.   Its lots of fun to watch him because he has ball skills very much advanced of his age group.   He can take the ball down field and move it through about 3-5 different defenders.   Sometimes I feel sorry for the kids because he is good enough to humiliate the defenders in most cases.   He either scores or assist in about 95% of his team's goals.

Its nice that he has something that he is really good at because he has so much to overcome in terms of cultural, emotional and educational challenges.

The parts are coming together.... I expect to have design work done on most of the models before the end of summer.
