I keep reading that they shouldn't be used. anything that whips against the tiny glass bead on the laser is bad and can knock it out of adjustment...supposedly.
Mine is starting too also, a 4 yr old Alpine. Might be time for a new one, or maybe a careful cleaning...not sure how to do that though!
years back in a Shaper Image catalog they have a cd that had fan blades in it, and when it spun it started a cyclone inside, and this removed crud from the laser. I've looked but can't find that.
Not sure if sending dust throughout a cdp is a good thing anyways!
