Need manual and advice for setup of RM 40
« on: 13 Mar 2007, 11:39 pm »
Hi,

I've recently picked up a used pair of RM 40 with serial numbers 12220 and 12219.  They were purchase from a dealer back in 2004 but not sure what vintage they are.   These speakers didn't come with manual but I understand that VMPS speakers allow for much adjustments for the user.  So I'm looking to get a copy of the manual and/or advice on how to do justice to these speakers and set them up right.

I've place them roughly in the same position where my old innersound eros had been with similar toe in and they sound very nice already.  However, would like to get the most out of them if I can.  So any help would be much appreciated.

Have you read the sticky above...set up guide http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=18067.0
Its a good start. You can also do a search of previous threads for RM40 set up. Lots of good reading.
Good luck

Hi Gerald,

And welcome to the VMPS circle as an RM40 owner.  As well, congratulations on scoring a pair of one of the most interesting and best performing speakers on the Planet (IMO) :thumb:

Mjosef's suggestion to start with the sticky for set up is a good one.

You'll find 100 different owners might give you 100 different suggestions and in most cases most of them will work.

The adventure you're about to embark on is one where you can tweak and adjust your speakers to  your system, room and personal preferences.

That is why there may be so many answers and opinions.  In the next few months, you will develop a keener sense of awareness to very small changes of the Bass system through adding and subtracting small amounts of mass (putty) to tune the response and reduce the distortion of the bass system.

You will also learn how to adjust the "pots" (L-Pads) first with "gross" adjustment, and then with "fine tuning" "clicks".

In general, the first thing you do is "converge" them to cross about 1 foot in front of your face when seated in the listening position.

Pots will normally be set on the high side of 12:00 to 1:00.

I would assume you will have to "add" putty.  Now if the bass sounds incredibly tight, low, and detailed, do add or subtract anything.

If it is a touch "woolly" you likely will have to add.

But keep in mind, that all tuning should be done "after" you feel your placement and listening position have been established.

You might get more accurate and better responses if you list your room size and particulars, as well as the system you are running.

Please give us a running account of your endeavours, and the results.  If you like them, we will enjoy your contentment.  If you feel you can get more out of them, we'll pitch in and offer suggestions.

Glad to join this family   aa

I have started to browse the various threads and have found the one John did to be very helpful for setup.

I plan to bi-amp my speakers but for now I had problems with the bi-amp circuitry on my left speaker with leaves the woofers without signal when I bi-amp; but works fine when I drive them in single amp mode.  I've been trading emails with Brian who has been gracious enough to help diagnose the problem.  So in the mean time I am listening in single amp mode with my 100w nuforce ref 8 amp.

What I would like to do now is to increase the weight of the bass and my initial inclination is to try to dail down the sensitivity on the treble and mid-bass so I can increase the volume and get fuller bass.  I don't know if I can do that while the speakers are running and which direction to turn the knobs on to decrease and increase sensitivity.  That's why I'm hoping to get my hands on a set of manuals to investigate.

Secondly, I'm not sure if dialing down sensitivity on the treble and mid-bass will actually lead to losing detail and if it will have other side effect on the music.

Is this the right way to go about increasing the weight on the bass or is there a better way to skin this cat?
