PC Speakers?
« on: 8 Mar 2007, 03:44 pm »
I hope I am in the right thread dept, but I have been using a 3 piece style speaker system for my PC.  Since I do most of my home at home with the pc I normally listen to music in my home office.  Currently I have the Altec Lansing 3 piece but to be honest I am looking for a system that will be somewhat of an "audiophile" standard.  Bose NO! Most of the pc speaker system are cheaply made stuff.  Just looking for something with higher quality and excellent, excellent sound!  Any recommendations and links would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

You can also look at pro audio monitors.  Many are designed for this purpose.

Get yourself a stereo receiver. Hook up your PC audio output to it. Like maybe into CD input. To the receiver hook up a pair of speakers. Bookshelf or floor standers. Whichever you like. I did mine this way and the receiver is driving a pair of old Snell J-IV's . Sounds pretty darn good.

NHT makes just what you're looking for: http://nhthifi.com/2006/pchifi.html

You should find a couple reviews on the web.

Well, these are a little tough to find but they are well worth the search and wait. The Monsoon Planar 9's are absolutely phenomenal. These things soundstage, image, do relatively deep bass, deliver plenty of detail and are absolutely non-fatiguing. I started out with their old MM-700's and cooked one of the ribbons and I decided to upgrade to the Planar 9's. The 9's are significantly better than the MM-700's.

As I'm told, these little ribbons are the same ribbon (in unmodified form) as the VMPS ribbon so many people love. Their crossover point is somewhere near 200Hz. These little jewels will do nearly 100db at 3 foot. Thats more than enough to pin your ears back. They are self amplified so all you need is a patch cord from your audio out to the Monsoon's. Oh, they do have an adjustable bass volume control for use when needed.

I've listened to quite a few different 'computer' monitor speakers, from the cheap to the expensive and these are the best I've heard to date. In fact I have two pair, one at home and one at work. I listen to the ones at work literally all day (Foobar FLAC's or Pandora).

As I mentioned, these are tough to find as they stopped making them about 3 or 4 years ago. eBay is probably your best bet. They are well under $100 used. I paid $129 new and $69 on closeout for my second set. Happy hunting  :thumb:

Scott, funny, I thought the MM series were quite a bit better than the planar series.  I have a couple of each and prefer the MMs.

I'd look into the Blue Sky line of products, particularly the Mediadesk.

Really  Guess it all comes down to personal preference, just like everything else in audio  :thumb: I think I've still got my old 700's (somewhere) if you need a single ribbon and sub for backups.

Another vote for Audio Engiine 5!  Nice setup and they have a subwoofer
output as well, in case you decide to go in that direction.

If you want to get wacky with your checkbook, consider the iCub and
matching speakers from JM Labs/Focal.  It has a 75 watt per channel
class D amp built in, powered sub and DAC.  Pretty cool package, but with
speakers is 1000 bucks.  May be out of the budget range!

It's also very compact and looks very cool too!

I just picked up a pair of these for eval, and they are quite nice.  Am probably going to keep them and be a dealer for them...! :thumb:
