I am contstantly nicking the the paint from the inside edges of chasis screws when I install/remove them. Is there a secret to keeping them perfect? Am I just a klutz or is there a special screwdriver tip made out of plastic that should be used or ???

Unless the screws are z-coated they will nick up. A lot of manufacturers simply spray paint the screw heads to match the housing color and the bond is poor. If the housing is black, the best screw will have a black zinc oxide coating on it and will be less prone to "chipping".

If they are Phillips head, the most common problem is a slightly undersized screwdriver bit. If you try to use a #1 bit in a #2 head, you will cause damage. Philips are really dependent on a good fit. Snap-On make the best fitting Phillips I've tried - ain't cheap, though.

It is friction.  Try using light oil and the correct size tool.
