Monster cable burns!!
« on: 13 Jun 2006, 07:22 pm »
Hi new to the forum. I have Odyssey Strat with cap upgrade and Tempest Pre.  VA Mozart speakers.  Love it so far!!

My monster speaker cable is about 7 years old. Don't remember which one it is. Pretty thick.  I would say 12 gage or bigger off hand.

I noticed that one of the speakers had quit playing. THe gold pin had fell off the speaker terminated side on one set.  I also noticed that both the sets of speaker wires to both speakers had almost a 2 inch section where the clear plastic had  burned black on the negative or black side almost at the speaker terminal!!

Any ideas what could cause this?

Probably oxidation.  Do you have any good pictures?

Here is a link to the photo. Hope it works. It is late and I am trying a short cut.  I am wondering if the lose post at the terminated end of the wire caused a problem.  Ordered speaker cables from Bluejeans last night.  With 20 min to go before closing the guys ran to the post office and mailed my cables. Waiting for me when I got home.

I don't know what caused this, but I'd have amp and speakers checked.

Take the Packer fan's advice before you burn your house down-that does not look normal.

Your amp is probably oscillating since it is both channels.   You don't want to continue running it that way.   A simple zobel network may solve the problem but I'd stop immediately and get in touch with Odyssey tech support.

Not to worry, the amp did not do this to the wires.  I have the exact same wires and use them in a system in my garage and in my three season room.  Both runs of wire experience this "burn" look.  After I cut the ends off and peeled back the covering, it was evident it was oxidation.  I contacted monster and they said it wouldn't degrade the sound but would warrant the wires if I returned them.  Since I am using them in the garage and in the three season room I thought I would just leave them in place.

Call monster and they will tell you what to do if you want to return them.

Later,
L

Thanks to all who responded. I ordered cables from Bluejeans in Seattle.  Recieved them in the mail next day. Have no issue with heat. So must be the old cables. I will see if Monster responds!
