May be dreaming in left field, but could one build the chime PS and analog output stage only, and piggy back off an existing DAC's RAWL and RAWR to bypass a CD/SACD/DVD player's output stage to make a multiformat machine?

You could, but I think the Chime has way too much gain.  It runs at +30dB or so.  The output from HagDac is a tiny 40mV or so.  You'd have to change your existing player to use a resistive I-V output converter like the HagDac.  So with the proper application, it can be done.
