Which universal player to modify?
« on: 26 Apr 2006, 02:44 pm »
Hi all,

I am looking to get a new universal dvd-player (with SACD, DVD-A and HDMI) and modify it for better sound/picture.

As always, the money are a problem.

That is why my researches indicated, so far, that the top candidates should be IN ORDER:

1. Samsung DVD-HD941 $105
2. Toshiba SD-6980 $150
3. Pioneer DV-79AVi $720
4. Yamaha DVD-S2500 $500
5. Denon DVD-2910 $510
6. Denon DVD-3910 $890
7. Denon DVD-1920 $280

The buget for parts is limited to US$250 / 200 EUR.

From your experience and in your opinion, which will offer the BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK after modifications? (not the best sound overall, but rather the best quality/price ratio).

Thank you

Strongly recommend the Pioneer DV-59AVi for lots of good reasons.

Given the $250 upgrade limitation you imposed, there's no question you would get the most bang for the buck by getting the Samsung and upgrading it. But that's a cop-out, because several players on your list would still be better than a Samsung with $250 worth of modifications. Those would include the Pio DV-79Ai,  the Denon DVD-3910, the Yammie DVD-2500 and maybe the Denon DVD-2910. A few others would be the Pio DV-59Ai that welwynnick mentioned and the Sherwood Newcastle SD-871.

Buying a cheap player and throwing a couple hundred dollars worth of modifications at it should improve the performance. But it is probably not going to be as good as a better quality, un-modded player, although you might get close if you plan your mods judiciously, do the work yourself and know what you are doing.

Are you going to be doing the modification?

$250 for parts is great if you are doing your own modification.   I agree, the Samsung would be the best to upgrade.

Good luck and have fun.
