need to get out of the seventys

Hello all While i am new to audio circle i have for a long time admired of high end audio as the subject says its time to upgrade check my system out under ecramer. i love my phase linear amp and pe amp(bought it new in the service recenly had it serviced i have listening to it through various speakers for over 20 years)and ive pretty much decided o go with a speaker kit from Selah Audio( I do mill/ cabnet work for a living , vener is a new step for me but not to much out of my expertise and i was an electronic tech in the navy so building the crossovers is fun) i know one of there floor standers will do me right i would like to keep this project under 5k including the the speakers i have a 12 by 14 room with my computer so say 2000 fr the speakers leaves $3000 do i need to by a new amp pre amp or can i split the 3k between the cd player new cables and a dac and maby turntable im not into home theater at all just reallly looking for the best two chanel i can afford used and new makes no diffrence to me. givr me some sugestions hey and if any of you are in 100 miles east stroudsburg pa that has a system id love to come listen to it

You could split the money up amongst everything. Three grand will get you enough quality. Next comes the research on what to get. You made a good choice on your speakers, congratulations.

welcome ecramer You are off to a good start by joining audiocircle lots of friendly guys and very helpful and high quality factory direct dealers and manufacturers here Do plenty of research and ask lots of questions first $5000 can get you a very nice system If you are a cabinet maker and can do wiring work that's a great advanatge You should be able to build a great pair of speakers from kit from companies here on AC like Selah, RAW, GR Research for a grand or less I'm sure others will be able to suggest a number of other excellent AC merchants There are also some great speakers available already built like SP Technologies 2 grand opens the door to an even wider choice, but you'd be better off keeping your budget at 1 grand for the speakers You can get lots of great used equipment, but unless you already know what it sounds like in advance, that's a difficult path The most important rule is not to commit to anything unless you've heard it first or unless you can get a refund or resell it for a reasonable price The journey to building a system itself can be tremendously enjoyable and a hobby in itself Enjoying great music on a great system is the other reward!

I came out of a 18 year long audio funk and thankfully found the internet. Use it to full advantage. Connect with local audiophiles and their groups. Read all the equipment reviews you can. Keep in mind your musical tastes and audio priorities may have changed over the years. You'll feel like a caveman entering the modern world.

Since the 70s bass has gotten tighter and less boomy for most audiophiles. CD playback quality has improved by leaps and bounds. Tube pre/power amps are back in vogue. You need to keep an eye on digitally inspired amplifier technology. And of course PC based sourcing (improved playback of CDs burned onto a hard drive).

DIY speakers with a $5000 budget provides lots of options. You shouldn't need to budget more than $1000 ($1500 at the max) for speakers. About the same for CD player or audio PC with the rest towards pre/power amps. We could affer more advice if we knew your tastes/priorities.

Welcome to AC!!!

First, take your time and audition, audition, audition!

Second, your room (size) will limit what speakers you get, so make sure you take that into consideration.

In fact, if I were you, I might budget a big chunk of your money for room correction, like TACT 2.0 or 2.2x, and some for room treatments.

The DEQX 2.6(P) can be used as a crossover, pre, dac, and room correction.

The Tact can be used as a pre-amp and a DAC, speaker correction and room correction.

I have the Selah Tanzanites and think for your size room they would be a pretty great match.

The best bang in speaker cables that I've found is the Greg Straley Reality cables..these will run you about $250 8' pair.

I think that I would try to audition a modded Squeezbox (Red Wine or Bolder) as a source..I would definately go computer as a source.

Third, join up with the NY Ravers, there's a wealth of experience, opinions and tastes to be shared...

Every set of ears is different and every room reacts in its own unique way, it's up to you to decide what's the best combination for you. As mentioned above, buying used is a great way to broaden your experience base, as would be signing up for some of the "tours" that happen here from time to time. It'll take some time to build a system that truely works as a whole, but the journey is a blast, enjoy it!

might want to give klaus a call-he had some garage sale stuff a few weeks ago-

im in syracuse-not sure if thats within your 100 mile window

Welcome to the Circle. I am so envious of people who have woodworking skills to build their own speakers. Selah is a good choice, so I would build the speakers first, then audition various front-end and pre/amp on your speakers in your room.

It is my strong opinion that THE thing that will make or break you as an audiophile and music lover is figuring out what your tastes are. I would pretty much ignore advices/audiophiles/dealers who keep going on about stuff like "absolute neutrality" "sounds like real music played in real space" , etc, etc. After you pay the money, fight the good fight, and shed the sweat, it really comes down to whether your system fits your music/tastes and whether you can enjoy your music in your room, not whether Harry Pearson can enjoy the music on your system.

I would really like to demo a rotel rcd-1072 and are thiere any thoughts on the Onix CD-2 CD from av-123 although i really hate to ask a judgment on equipment when the cmpany have thier owh circle here

Heading up to Lake Senica on the 14 of jan. to do some wine taisting but proably wont have any time to do much audio evaluaation.
