Powered subwoofer cable?
« on: 1 Dec 2005, 11:50 pm »
Can anyone post experiences with different subwoofer cables?  I see that some companies such as Monster have a dedicated subwoofer cable.  Could any regular interconnects be used?  I'm curious as to why most of the better cable companies do not have a dedicated sub cable.  Any ideas which type would work best...copper, silver, etc.  My budget is around $100 - $200.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can use just a regular style interconnect.

If it's going to be a longer cable you might want to get one that's shielded.

I personally use an M-80 Sub Cable from Bolder Cables. They have a circle here at Audio Circle. http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?board=11

He could build you a rather nice cable to meet whatever your needs are. And it'll fall into your price range as well unless you go for something that's waaay overkill for a sub cable.

I'd just make sure you use something that has good plugs on it (preferrably Eichmann Bullet Plugs or WBT NextGen's).

Copper or silver shouldn't matter much in a sub cable.

FWIW I used to have a fairly nice Monster Sub Cable. The cable itself was fine, but the connector's were only so-so. I had Bolder Cables put Eichmann Bullet Plugs on the sub cable I had built & it was a definite improvement. If I was doing it now I might go for NextGen's instead of the Bullet Plugs (Bullets weren't quite available back then).

I also use the M-80 as a sub cable and am happy with it.   :D

*caveat*     Never compared sub cables.

I use a run from Bluejeanscable.com .  Also, they will custom make you runs there for use with a Behringer 1124 Feedback destroyer.

I could be wrong, but I think a sub cable usually has 75ohms impedance as opposed to around 50ohms for a standard audio cable.

It is (to my understanding) more like a video or coax digital cable.

Maybe an expert will chime in and clarify.

Nope , regular RCA's will work just fine.

And you do not need "Directional" cables.
