The totem bug that wont go away in the forrest
« on: 24 Feb 2008, 08:55 am »
For a whole year now I"ve been going buggy over this bbrruuzz! buzz sound that comes and goes and disappears for a while intermittently and unpredictably on one of my forests.Checked the spider seams on the driver basket, made sure all the screws are sufficiently tightened around the drivers and the crossover terminal blocks screws are tight.  It happens during low bass frequencies, volume levels don't seem to affect it much. I can hear it most when bass frequency is playing with a droney tone to it.  Brought it in for warranty service and all they did was tighten some scews.  It went away for a while, it comes back.  I tightened some screws myself but it still always comes and goes.  Has anybody else had experience with fixing the buzzing ? Im told about loose wires in cabinet, told of loose screws, braided wires could touch inside basket ,saw the article of unglued basket spider , I found wood chips caused by screws pushing out the mahogany veneer inside line up and could fall into the holes in the cardboard ring that could get in the voice coil, told about possibility of overheated voice coil warping the its symetrical shape causing a rubbing against the outer cylinder wall cause the noise, even an insect could get in voice coil .Or is it fried?

Just a guess, but it kind of sounds like a voice coil to me.

I had a buzz at a certain frequency in a speaker once and I found it to be a bad driver.  I would have never had guessed because it only occurred at certain frequencies on certain recordings, not all the time.  Swapped out the driver with a new one and the problem was solved.

I'm no professional, but I'd either ask for a new driver to be installed, or, have your service guy swap out the drivers and see if it follows the driver.

I had the exact same problem with my Arro's, and the woofer went fairly quickly afterward.

I've experienced a similar problem before with another brand of speaker and the best way to fix it is to isolate the problem by making it happen "on demand." First, download some frequency generator software, e.g. this one, and hook up your computer to your stereo. Then step through test tones incrementing (or decrementing) slowly from low to high frequencies. At some point you'll hit the resonant frequency that causes the buzzing and when that happens you'll be able to figure out what causes it. Good luck!

I had a similar problem in a pair of Paradigms a year or so ago.  Turned out the woofer was partially de-laminated from the voice-coil.  The service guy diagnosed it very quickly - he played some music and placed his hand on the woofer to hold the cone still.  If the woofer is fine, the sound should stop.  If not, you will hear a buzzing behind the cone, which is the voice-coil flapping against the motionless woofer (if the voice-coil is partially de-laminated part of it will still move while the woofer is motionless).  Don't know if this is the problem you're having, but your description was similar to what was happening to me.  Good luck.

Update: I was able to do a bunch of bursts down from 200hz to 35hz in 5hz increments and graph a frequency range where the problem seems to occur.  I tested 4 times between 50hz to 100hz. There were fluctuations of buzzing noise from very mild to very audible noise that seem to wildly shift in volume with each test done. At between 40hz to 50hz it seems to be the quietest then at 35hz its awful again. Touching the rubber surround with my fingers seems to quiet it while its playing. It's my left speaker that's bad, the right side seems to buzz a little at 35hz only but I think thats normal. If anybody can recognize this pattern please let me know. Your previous information has proved helpful so far. I thank you very much for the info and any new info. I think woofer replacment is in order.
