AKSA with 4ohm load

Hey guys,

This summer I plan on building North Creek Music Rhythm/revelator speakers and I was considering building an ASKA 55 (with nirvana upgrade) to power them.  The Rhythms are 4ohm speakers and the designer, George Short, recommends using an amp that doubles power into 4 ohms.  Just curious if the ASKAs provide this and if you feel they'd be a good match.  The Rhythms are slightly sensitive at 91dB so I'm hoping that's enough power.  Thanks,

George

George,

If the impedance of these speakers never drops below 3.5R, then all is well for the Nirvana 55W.  If it does, then I'd suggest the 100W Nirvana.

Either way, 91dB/watt/meter is just fine and the 55W will still go VERY loud.

Cheers,

Hugh

Thanks Hugh, I will verify the minimum impedance.

Hmmm 3.2 Ohm minimum....there goes some more money!!
Oh well guess I'll just be saving for awhile longer, ultimately we all know I would have wanted 100 watts anyway.
I assume this will be fine with the 100w Nirvana?
Thanks for the help,

George

...and the 100 W plays only 3 dB louder......

George,

I am sorry.  But just to confirm, I have run the 55W with 3.5R speakers and it runs well, but when compared to the 100W amp there are occasional signs of strain;  it just doesn't have the drive.  With a 6R-8R load, it's actually very difficult to tell the difference between the amps;  but as you go lower, the differences start to emerge.  There is no doubt that with sub 4R the 100W is more suited as current delivery is superior.

Cheers,

Hugh

Ok, 100watts it is.
Thanks Hugh,

Hi Hugh,
I've been considering building the GR-Research Diluceo (the MTM version of their new Criterion speaker).  It is a 4R speaker and dips to 3.4R; efficiency is around 91db.

I wrote to Danny Richie asking about biamping this speaker (it will work, since the Diluceo uses a parallel crossover)... the question to Danny was "what impedances would the tweeter and woofer amps see?"  Answer:  Highs 5-5.5R, dip to 4.5R minimum; Lows will see an average impedance of a little over 4R with a minimum dip of 3.5R at about 200Hz.

So, the question:  if I biamp these with 55w AKSAs, do you think I will be happy?  (Recall that I have 3 55w AKSAs in my house at present, so if I buy a 100w AKSA I'll have to postpone buying the GK-2, an option that is not in the cards.)

thanks,
Peter
