Oddball Meadowlark Speakers
« on: 1 Mar 2022, 12:04 pm »
Hello world.

I have a pair of Meadowlark speakers that I am unable to identify, but they sound incredible.

There's a powered/active sub and, a mid and a tweeter on each speaker.  They have the slanted front, like Blue Herons but only three drivers per cabinet.  Anyone happen to know what they might be?
They seem similar to the Nightingale, with the active subs but they're significantly different.  They weigh about 100 pounds each

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

Are you sure they are from Meadowlark? I thought all Meadowlark speakers have the model name on the back plate where the speaker binding posts are located.

My Kestrel 2 speakers are identified on both the black base plate, the bird logo routed into the wood on the front (just above the port), and on the terminal plate on back. I'm not aware of any they built with amplifiers, but they might have done some models like that during the company's third iteration.

My Shearwaters definitely have the model on the back.  Paul built a lot of prototypes, custom builds, and small run speakers.  He's back in business last I heard.  All custom speakers, active with DSP, cost no object.  Drop a note with a pic attached, if it's only identifying a speaker I wouldn't imagine Paul would ignore you.

I think you mean Pat, Pat McGinty. Pat or a member of the community over at hifihaven.org, where Pat hangs out, should be able to identify them for you.

Pat is now doing powered, DSP speakers.  You may have a prototype or a very early design (pre-DSP) that didn't make it to market.

Check out his new stuffs:

Back in the day he offered passive 2 & 3-way floor standing transmission line loudspeakers (I'm a TL fan) that he named after bird species.  Decades ago I heard the 2-way Kestel in a 12ft glass cube (horrible) and the 3-way Herron where I fell asleep (good sign or bad?).

He back with a modern vengeance in an all out pursuit of reproducing HD audio.  All his current models are active, using Ncore amps, high-end Satori drivers (including beryllium tweeters), Dirac, and miniDSP SHD streamer.  From an email reply he offers a $10,500/pair 2-way monitor up to a $35,000/pair 4-way 5 driver floor stander.  More drivers/amps simply extends F3 and ultimate output.  He has a 6 month backlog.  He admitted to being bored with merely "good" loudspeakers.

Unfortunately those prices are beyond my budget and he works from very northern NY (Redwood), nearly 500 miles from me, so no auditions.

Yes, Pat, not Paul, thanks.  Don't get old without a lifetime supply of Prevegen.

Seriously?    :o

Years ago I owned the Heron "i" and thought they were great speakers.  As did anyone who heard them in my setup.  As a matter of fact, a local buddy (a very experienced audiophile) who heard them at my place was so impressed he rushed out and bought a pair of Blue Herons -- the next model up.    :dunno:

Good sign = didn't irritate.  Bad sign = bored me (and I recall being very tired for some reason).

Yes, the universal criticism is too polite, not dynamic enough.  The total lack of brashness and bite is also lauded as their greatest strength, they're very musical and sweet combined with impressive detail.  They actually have plenty of dynamics if driven by a beefy enough amp, I'm thinking around 400 watts would be about right.   The listed efficiency ratings are very optimistic.

Agreed.  I had 120wpc of Dodd Audio tube goodness (el34) on my Herons and the dynamics and speed were insane.  Generous turn of the volume pot could blow the windows out of my "largish"  15 x 25 room with cathedral ceilings.

Pat made a Heron model with a gas filled tweeter which over time lost its gas.

Yes, a known problem with the gas Piezo tweeter.  Model was the Blue Heron.  Once the problem appeared I believe Pat fixed it with a different tweeter in later BH versions..... and also offered replacement tweeters for current owners with original tweeter.
