Klipsch RP-500M upgrade
« on: 14 Nov 2021, 04:36 pm »
With the help of E-Zee (meaning I could not have put it together without him), I upgraded my third set of Klipsch speakers with Danny's upgrade kit. This was more difficult than the RP-504C and the RP-8000F due to space constraints. In the end, the tweeter and woofer circuit had to be on separate boards 4"x6" and 2 1/2"x5. I am betting the 4x6 could be more narrow and the other one a little shorter. Having separate boards with the space constraint also did not allow me to attach the boards and then install. I am not at the level of soldering inside a speaker, so I had two ins for both positive and negative lines.  I took a couple of pieces of small wire and twisted everything together to attach to the terminals. I still had fun despite the challenges and again, big thanks to E-Zee.
First attempt and it would not fit.

Part of the reason I could not side mount a single board.

Scraped glue and had to trim a couple of the braces on the bottom for the board.

Getting the boards ready to install.

Installed and ready for speakers.

Keep us posted.

They sound great. They are less tinny or bright and now match up with my other upgrades. Music listening is better, less tiring and I can increase the volume to hear more detail without it sounding too loud (if that makes sense).

The second speaker was easier. I put the no-rez in first and trimmed one of the plastic legs on the input plastic housing (Klipsch has four that extent a couple of inches into the box and one was touching one of the inductors).  I also narrowed the board for the woofer circuit and that made for a better fit for the no-rez.

My media room is becoming 50/50 movies/music. Hanging out to watch a great movie or just relaxing and listening to music. I don't think I can do anything with the Klipsch rp-502s bipole side surrounds outside of disabling them if playing multi-channel stereo.

Thank you Danny for helping me take it to the next level.

If anyone is wondering - upgraded caps (Alumen Z-cap with Miflex bypass for tweeter and Gen I Sonicaps with Miflex for the woofer) and Mills resistors do fit!  They sound fantastic!

Oh, and I fixed the tilted inductor in the picture to be more of 90 degrees orientation.
