Newbie again
« on: 20 Dec 2020, 05:23 am »
Greetings All. I have been away from the high end for over 15 years now and am amazed at how much has changed and how much I have to learn and relearn. My last system consisted of a Wadia 15 spinner running to a Z-Systems RDP-1 digital eq that could output the 24/96 signal from my Perpetual Tech upsampler/DAC then to a pair of Cary 805C amps pushing Merlin VSM-SE’s with Harmonic Tech cabling throughput. Currently in the process of building a pair of speakers that will use the Dynaudio Esotar tweeters which I have a NOS pair of, mated with the Scanspeak 8545 midbass drivers which the Merlins used. Plan to push these with a Pass or First Watt and Supratek Cabernet preamp. Looking for feedback from anyone who has experience mating a top tier tube preamp with a solid state amp. I loved my Cary tube amps and would like that sound back with a more physical, dynamic presentation. Looking forward to getting back at it.
To the hunt!

Suggest you do more research before getting into DIY loudspeaker building.  Read Floyd Toole's "Sound Reproduction" 3rd edition to learn how loudspeakers and subwoofers behave in-room.  He recommends shopping for loudspeakers based on spinorama test results and use of 4 evenly spaced subwoofers.  With monitors being a given, recommend looking into active designs (very dynamic) that use wave guides to control dispersion and improve imaging.  Buchardt A500 and Genelec "The Ones" come to mind.  And of course a proper listening room (not small or squarish, well insulated, and hopefully dedicated).
