If you use ethernet for carrying music over your network, you may be introducing electrical noise from your router. This system converts ethernet to fiber and back to ethernet. This interrupts the electrical connection between the router and your music system so that none of that electrical noise can be transmitted to your system. This will help in reducing the noise floor in the system and increasing that sense of a "black background" and, in turn, imaging and sense of realism. The effect may be subtle or marked depending on the degree of noise present and the sensitivity/quality of your system components.
