Cheaper class d audio amp?
« on: 29 Jan 2017, 01:30 am »
Hi, I am looking for a cheaper class d audio amp that can put out 150-250+ watts into 8ohm stereo and have a case. Are there any cheap kits out there for purchase? Thanks, NL

NEXTLEVEL5 is looking for an amp with 150W - 250W+ per channel @ 8Ω.

The CDA-224 for sale in the Trading Post is 60W/ch @ 8Ω; the most powerful amp from Class D Audio is the CDA-500 or SDS-500 with 250W/ch @ 8Ω only.

How cheap are you looking for? These aren't cheap, but I have heard very good things about the Crown XLS 1502 and higher (the 1002 will have higher S/N ratio)

Hi Nextlevel5:

This thread will give you many opinions of these amps and many ideas of how to build these amps--from cabinet drawer cases to beautifully machined cases. It's long but a fun read. I'm still using ClassDAudio amps but I bumped up in power to an SDS-250 and SDS-500--same speakers as Maggies suck up power from any amp.

Hi NL5,

I've got an SDS 250 ClassDaudio amp that I'm no longer using, and was planning to sell.  It is 125 wpc (not your minimum of 150 wpc into 8 ohms, but close) and is installed in a simple aluminum case with a SMPS that puts out the requisite 48 DC.  The amp probably weighs less that 5 pounds (one of the reasons I went with the SMPS) and has Vishay fixed resistors at the inputs (rather than the adjustable pots that came with the kit ... although I think I could probably find the pots if you really wanted them), and is certainly not a piece of audio jewelry, but it works fine and sounds terrific.  I would be happy to send you photos if you are interested, and am flexible on pricing.  If you read through the LONG audiocircle thread topic linked by Steve K you'll see some comments in there from me regarding various input resistor options I tried.

i have the ClassD sds-470c amp. 300wpc 8 ohm, 600wpc 4ohm. Fully built $695 but i believe you can buy a kit even though not listed on the sight.
