This Lighter Note LDR volume control/preamp uses Light Dependent Resistors (LDR's) to control the volume level. This approach is intended to do away with switch contacts and wipers, to give a cleaner, smoother control of volume. The Lightspeed Attenuator designed by George Stantscheff has been highly touted, and the Lighter Note LDR was developed by Uriah Dailey to be an improvement over that earlier design. The Lighter Note includes a high-quality power supply, high-value by-pass resistors and circuitry to vary total attenuator resistance.
This unit has one set of inputs and one set of outputs, plus a channel balance control. I was told this unit was built by Don at Abacus Music using the board developed by Uriah Dailey. It is a very clean, professional build.
I found this Lighter Note LDR volume control to be a more open and transparent than the Lightspeed Attenuator. It also allows for adjusting the balance with a knob on the back, rather than having to take the case apart and tweak a very small screw on the board inside. If you are looking for a volume control/preamp that “gets out of the way”, this is it.
