Nice to see the dog back  :) I have the PB1i's and love them with a 14Bsst2

I have just recently upgraded my speakers and went through a comparison of PMC speakers.

I had PMC PB1 signatures with 7BSST2 driving them.  An awesome combination.  The reason for looking to upgrade was that I had heard PMC MB2s and was captivated with the amazing midrange performance.

I particularly like the bass presentation of the PMC speakers and so limited myself to their offerings.

I was looking for a clean, dynamic presentation with minimum compression, capable of SPL peaks around 110dB (95-100dB program) but still OK at 70-80dB program.

I came up with the following shortlist:

So that I won't get peak distortion, what's the maximum SPL before clipping the 7BSST2?

And how much power is needed to get my 110dB peaks?

The other consideration was bass distortion.  The more the bass cone has to move, the more the likelihood of distortion.  So, how much did the bass cones have to move in order to displace the same volume of air?

My understanding is that the Fact.12 is comparable to the IB2 but in a more domestic enclosure.  PMC could not use the IB2 midrange unit in it as the magnet assembly is wider than the Fact.12 cabinet.

Nice as it sounded, the Fact.12 was just too insensitive for my setup.

I went for the MB2.  I actually got a ex-demo pair of MB2-XBD for less than the new price of the MB2.

If I was in Canada, I would give the Bryston speakers a good looking at as well.

David, that's a mountain of interesting information you've compiled there. A couple of questions : how big is your listening room ? Also, your observation is that the 7BSST2's would be driven into clipping right around where they would be getting your desired 110dB peaks with the fact.12 ( ballpark somewhere around 400W ) ?

I have a friend who had MB2's and he still talks about them - very special. I've spent a good bit of time around IB2i's and like them very much but while the stated target of the PMC design team was to get the fact.12 to offer the same level of performance as the IB2i, they are very different beasts in terms of how they sound.

If you are looking at purchasing another set of loudspeakers you take a look at these from Legacy. Here is a link to The review in The Absolute Sound. http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/legacy-focus-se-loudspeaker-tas-215/

Legacy website link http://legacyaudio.com/products/view/focus-se/
These speakers have a in room Sensitivity:    (Room, dB@ 2.83V) 95.4 dB

Thanks D.D.

Room size (WLH): 4m x 5m x 3m approx.

My setup details are here:

I was surprised at the lack of sensitivity of the Fact.12  What concerned me was that if I was using 7BSST2 (600W/8 ohm) with dynamic, less heavily compressed program material then I could be driving them into occasional clipping.  Not enough to get the red clip LEDs going, but still, potentially, stressing the speakers.  Over a longer timeframe, this could lead to speaker problems as described by pmcd (the original poster).  Telarc 1812 anyone?

Perhaps you need 28BSST2 to drive them  :o

The midrange unit in the big PMCs is quite special.  Older models used to use the ATC mid.

I understand that JVC Studios in Japan asked PMC to fit the MB2 mid into the IB1 and so the IB2 was born.

What is the point of starting a topic, getting a discussion going, then deleting all of your posts - other than to waste everyone's time?

Perhaps it is a cover-up like :green:  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3379210/An-800-year-old-mobile-phone-left-ALIENS-Austria-according-latest-bizarre-claims-conspiracy-theorists.html

Seriously, I agree.  Was starting to follow the discussion as I have a pair of old B&W P6s.  In the old house in the basement (which was a huge room of almost 700 square feet) I had a receiver but was using a 3BST driving them with no problem.

Sorry folks for any hard feelings you may have to the way I went about this but Im new to the circle and msging etiquette, I needed some info and was very appreciative of the time and information given by all. I just figured  the conversation was over since no more replies had come in for a while so I figured I would delete it.

It's not hard feelings.  Understand that others either in the near future or at some point down the road could have similar issues.  It is easy to use the search function.

That's fine - just keep in mind that this is a resource for problems and resolutions that everyone can use not just someone who posts about the problem.
