Alpha LS update. Getting close to the end!!!!
« on: 15 Nov 2004, 06:21 pm »
Hello everyone!! Just thought I would give you all an update on how the Alpha LS project is going. Keeler Theatre-DIY Projects I am at the most time consuming step in the build process now, the finish. I have a special finish in mind that I am going to use on this project, so the cabinets have to be PERFECT. One thing is for sure, these babies are getting pretty heavy to move around. Sanding these has about killed me, but they will be worth it. My goal is to have these playing by Christmas, so I will keep you all posted!!! Thanks for looking, Shawn.

Progress!  Hang in there Shawn - it'll be worth the work you're putting into them. :D

Looks great Shawn!  Keep plugging away...

I've been working on my Alphas on again/off again for quite a while now.  Last night I finished up the LH speaker.  On the RH speaker, I need to solder up 8 more woofers.  I know what you mean about the weight.  As I glued up the enclosures they just kept getting heavier and heavier and heavier....

Oh... don't forget to put the back panels on the LH speaker!   :rotflmao:

Keep it up, man. You'll get there. I was about 20 hours left at your point. It takes a while to do the soundcoating and finishing right and get the wiring done. I'm pretty slow, though, so YMMV. The end product is very worth it.

Kind of off the subject, and maybe Danny can answer this, what size of round-over bit did you Alpha owners use on the corners? I was thinking a 1/8" round-over myself. Any thoughts? Thanks, Shawn

Danny Richie

Corner size.

The enclosures that Mark Schifter built for us used a 3/4" round over. Looks great!

3/4" is not a common sized router bit and you may need a beefy router to use one that size too.

A 1/2" round over is pretty common for routers with the standard 1/4" diameter drive.

1/2" is also just large enough to allow you to roll a paper backed veneer right around it too.

I think the biggest round-over bit you can find & fit would be best.  I was thinking of using something link this:

...where the short end of the radius would be coming off the front/back faces and the longer part would curl around the side (more gradually).  Just an idea for you to chew on.

Also, I assume you used a Jasper Jig to cut all those holes.  If so, I found it very handy, when doing the other router-ing operations, to leave that big Jasper Jig base plate on the router.  It was nice having that wing sticking off the base to help keep the router planted flat.  It was particularly handy when routing those long vertical edges w/ a larger bit, where you otherwise wouldn't have much of a standard baseplate to ride on the speaker.
