JRiver vs. Foobar - sorry, JR - you lose!
« on: 10 May 2016, 09:32 pm »
I just got a new laptop with Windows 10 so I tried to download another JRiver program for it. I couldn't because in order to do that for free, you need the same OS. OK - I figure, I'm willing to pay $20+ for that.... but NNNNNOOOOOO!!!!!  $50!  :o  Buying new is now $70! (Bought it a few years ago for $30 and upgraded for 20. Why the huge price increase?)

So I did foobar2000.org - free!  :thumb:

I have the new v.22 trial JRiver for 30 days and the new foobar (v. 1.13.10 released in March) and did a little comparison.

Foobar's high frequencies are little bit more clear and the bass is tighter. In comparing the two on Melody Gardot's album My One and Only Thrill, the plucked bass sounds more like "bom" vs. "wom" for JRiver.

Bye, bye - JRiver.

Glad to hear you like Foobar2000.  I have been very happy with it for a long time.

You should be able to install using the same master license.  Download as trial first then restore.  I went from 8.1 to 10 and did just that.  No issue.  Either way, enjoy.

The Windows only version is $50 for new users.

"Purchase Windows only for $49.98  (Works only for Windows)"

And if nothing else you do have a 30 day trial so you can at least A/B/A them.  I'm almost certain your current Windows Master Key should work.

This is for v. 20, when you download now, it's for v.22. I could be wrong and it still maybe this price. Regardless, Foobar sounds better for free.

Since you are using Foobar2000, you might consider trying MathAudio Room EQ with it for two channel listening.

It is free for Foobar2000 and worked well here when I tried it.  Just install it as a component and if you have a calibrated mic you can do the room measurements.  The mics are under $100 with calibration data if you have a good A/D converter in the PC.

Good luck either way.

How did you get Foobar to play ISO files?

If you have a DSD DAC, install the DSD ASIO components from the Sourceforge pages.  Did that for woodsyi and it works well with his EMMLabs DAC2X.

If you are running PCM DAC only, the DFF file component does not recognize ISO files.  That have to be DFF format to play.

Good Afternoon, Tyson:

Maybe you can try MagicDisc (free at: http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-history.htm) to mount the iso (to a dirve letter) and then in Foobar, play it like a normal CD?   Thanks.

Sincerely,
Kingsley.

charmerci, if the MUSE USB TO SPDIF converter you are using does not require a specific driver to work with Windows you might try downloading the ASIO4ALL and trying jRiver again. jRiver 21 is sharper and clearer than 20 and sounds better to me than 20 when the ASIO4ALL driver is used.
Of course YMMV.

The people have not properly configured / optimized foobar2000 player and the windows to get the best possible sound.

By the way, foo_input_sacd-0.9.7

True.  And it plays ISO files.  I was dreading having to extract DFF or DSF from ISOs.  It beats Aries and Aurender in this regard. I think my PC is robust enough that it can handle the extraction as I play the music.  I haven't really compared ISO vs. DFF/DSF of the same stereo tracks.

Output / Device

I have - in Jriver.  ISO played natively beats the DSF extraction by the ISO2DSD program.
