Joule in their new room
« on: 18 Dec 2015, 04:01 pm »
So, since taking delivery of my Joule in June, I have moved them to a larger room and have been slowly treating it.  The sound was spectacular to begin with, as they really like more room to breathe, however, taming some bass humps and decay times has provided further tantalizing improvements.  With a new rack (Adona corporation), myrtle wood amp stands (Battlerock studios), and overhead track lighting, the room is starting to look nice.

I wanted to share an idea for bass traps that Ryan thought up, and I followed through with.  I built frames out of 1x2 pine to hold 5 Roxul panels each - they are roughly 16 x 16 inches in cross section.  I wrapped those in some porous suede material and built "caps" for the ends with base molding so they look like columns when stacked.  Not only did the appearance exceed my expectations, but their performance is great too.  With two of these (I have another pair in the corner opposite these) I measured around a 4 dB improvement in a bass hump between 50 and 60 Hz.

Anyway, enjoy - naturally the Joule steal the show in the images.

Ryan, the room is starting to look very good, I like the look of your set up as well as the speakers, whose diffuser did you use behind the system rack?

The pillars look fantastic Ryan!  Maybe you'll inspire others with similar ideas.  And I have no doubt they're effective as well, being such a large volume of absorptive material.

Next, Ryan and I have a plan to treat the wall behind the speakers.  I'm going to cut a digital diffuser pattern into 1/2" veneered ply using the CNC, something to closely match his speakers.  (Other) Ryan will then cut out the drywall behind his speakers, fill the cavity with some like OC705 or Roxul, and then place the veneered digital diffuser into the cutout.  Frame around the panel with moulding, and he'll have a VERY effective diffuser/broad-band absorber covering nearly the full wall.  Combined with the nice large dimensions of his room, the results should be fantastic.

I love the idea, but my job is pretty good here.  I don't know how you feel about Michigan, but there's an empty lot on one side of me if the alternative works

Hi Phil, thanks for the kind words.  I finally have a room that just feels nice to be in.  Those are GIK Acoustics Q7D panels.  They are nice - somewhat heavy, but well made for the price.  Then might have some that come unfinished now, which opens up other possibilities.

Yes indeed... I appreciate the continued interest and support in this project, Ryan.  While I would imagine it will be bit before I get them installed, I will post images when they're done.  Great stuff!

Now that's something I can get down with! I tire of giant stuff out in the space, that's ugly. Make the room one you want to be in, not just listen in.

Hi Ryan,

Awesome setup! How wide is new room and curious what your speaker spread is. Center of driver to center. Looks like a 15 degree toe in but hard to tell from pic.

Thx

Hi Rob.

The room is 21 feet wide and 19 feet deep. The speakers are just more than 9.5 feet apart (116 inches), from the center of one baffle to the other.  I didn't measure toe in, but I would estimate 20 degrees...they point just outside of each shoulder from the listening position.

Setup was almost all by ear.  I began with Cardas' golden ratio values and then spent much of a day moving them while listening to music. Tape measure in one hand, beer in the other  8)

Paul - thanks.  I may be looking for some treatments in one or more of the systems at some point in the near future.  I'm in the process over the next couple of months after I get some non-audio stuff down to fine tune the analysis of my rooms to plan for some room treatments. It's always nice to see a great room coming together.  I drove about 2.5 hours one way several months back to hear Joules that Ryan delivered and set-up.  Wonderful speakers.

I listened to 2 rooms with sonus farber strads yesterday,.8 pass electronic's ,professional room treatments, (well into 6 figures). They were fantastic systems.
I felt i made a really good investment with the Vapor's.
I have yet to hear something that makes me want to &%$#upgrade!
