Cat 5 Source
« on: 12 May 2016, 01:14 pm »
I don't know anything about purchasing Cat 5 cable, but I stumbled on a speaker cable that uses them and would like to try as a little DIY project.

Can anyone please recommend a source in the US that can provide equivalent to this?  http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/cat-5e-utp-network-cable-solid-low-smoke-zero-halogen-blue-priced-per-metre-vb20w

Thanks in advance!

There are also lots of US distributors of raw wire and supplies including newark.com, Allied Electronics and Mouser

For speaker cables, Cat3 is as good as Cat5. You can find surplus or end of reel Cat3 almost for free.

Home Depot (and Lowes also, I believe) sells a few different types of Cat5e not only in 100/500/1000 ft. spools, but also by the foot if you don't need that much.

Thanks all.

I found a relatively inexpensive solution from Monoprice.

Can anyone tell me if the Cat 5 patch cable will be made of the same materials as the bulk order I purchased?

I completed my speaker cable build and am happy with the results.

I have a friend who has requested that I make him 2 pair, and I only had enough left for 1 set.

The cable needs to be pure copper and not tinned.

Trying to avoid purchasing another 250 ft when I only need about 60 ft.

Thanks in advance.

Again, I would just go down to the local Home Depot or Lowe's where you can buy un-tinned solid copper CAT5 by the foot.

As a rule factory made, massed produced, patch cables are made from stranded core wire. I assume the 4 pair cable you bought is solid core.
