Marbles,
Since I will be using a separate amp and equalizer (behringer) on the bass the cabinet dimensions are not as important.  I will tying passive radiator, sealed and ported....whatever sounds best with my electronics/room.  Both woofers will be in a cabinet about half the volume of the RM-40.  Equalization works fine as long as you don't play too dang loud.  If you want 120db monster stomps then you had better use a lot of woofer area.  Two 10 inch woofers are fine equalized flat to about 20hz if you ...

Thanks Ric.

Best of luck.

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone has tried blackhole 5 as dampening in their speakers?  any sonic improvements?  it's not cheap.

I'm considering having a friend bring some into oz for me.

Just swapped out the stuffing in the mids for the wool last night.  Unfortunately it was after 1am when I finished so I couldn't exactly crank the stereo to evaluate.   I got up first thing this morning and had a listen.  Funny thing about hearing and time, but I can't honestly say it is horribly noticeable.  I would venture to say it is smoother in the upper midrange particularly the female voice.   It is subtle enough that it makes me wonder whether it is pyschological effect or a real effect.  I did listen to see if I can hear any downside, as I always evaluate tweaks for their shortcomings and never take a tweak for granted.   I didn't hear any downside, so in the end I think I do indeed hear some smoothness in the upper midrange frequencies.  All in all for what I paid for this tweak, which wasn't much, I am pretty happy.

Tito, if you want some of my extra wool to try out your monitors give me a buzz.

Josh, my observations after a month parallel yours.

I have extra wool too, enough for a pair of RM/X or RM-40...

I do have to say that I don't listen at blasting levels so this could account for some of the subtleness.

Has anyone noticed static-y sound coming from the midrange panels?  I am hearing horrible amounts of static pops and stuff coming from the mids.  Sounds like a bad LP.

I upgraded my midpanels and did the wool swap at the same time, so I am trying to figure out the culprit.   Wool does get staticy so it could be this.   Right now things sound pretty horrible, and I am hoping it is just a wool thing.

I doubt it's the wool.

Double check your cable connections.  Is it coming from both speakers, or just one?

If it were me, I would try a different set of speakers to see if it was them or an upstream component..

I will try, indeed, but there were no changes in upstream components, only these two changes.

Think it is my CD player actually.  Got to do a few more tests.

Does anyone still have some lambswool they want to sell?  If not, please tell me where I can purchase some.  I'm going to upgrade the stock caps to auricaps in my RM40's in about 2 weeks, so I figure this is the opportunity to also do the lamswool tweak.

Thanks,

Corbin

madisound.com

$9.99/lb

I used a little over a 1lb in each RM 40.

Personally I find the more expensive "black sheep wool" puts more "blackness" between instruments and vocals :rotflmao:  :rotflmao:  :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

I heard there are "three bags full" on E-bay.....

I couldn't resist

Zybar,

Thanks for the info.  Ekovalsky offered to send me his left over wool.  I'll post my impressions of both the upgraded auricaps and lambswool in a few weeks, although I don't know how I'll tell which change is making what difference.

Thanks Eric,

The only way is to do one thing at a time.  So, wait to do the wool until later.  I do this all the time -- I'll change two or even three things and can't figure out what's going on.

I finally installed the two pounds of lambswool in my RM40s.   I think I needed 3 or 4 pounds for maximum stuffing, so I left some of the fiberglass in place so the lambswool would be a tightly packed fit.

My initial impression was no difference in sound.  Upon further lisetning, maybe I'm hearing a little better imaging, but I only trust my initial impression as I tend to imagine things if they're not readily apparent.

Tweak Summary:

Cost of Tweak = $25.00
Time of Tweek = 30 minutes
Impression of Tweek = marginal, but no negatives
Knowing that I've got all the tweaks others have = priceless
