X-LS Encore v LGK's
« on: 1 Jun 2014, 01:20 am »
I am in the process of building an office system and,

Looking for a comparison of these 2 speakers.
Danny please chime in on this one.

I built a set of the Encores, for my brother, and really enjoyed their sound.
I realize, off the bat, that the LGK's will need supplemental bass.

Thanks
Neil

Neil,

I have both X-LS Encores (with upgraded crossovers) and LGK's. I have listened to each pair of speakers, both in a desktop (near field) setup in my office and as main speakers in a small (11' x 13') room with the main listening position 10' from the speakers. Listening included with and without a subwoofer in each situation.

In the office desktop system I prefer the LGK's. As mains with a 10' listening distance I prefer the Encores. I prefer subs with both the Encores and the LGK's however, the bass extension and output of the LGK's in a near field situation is surprisingly good by themselves.

I agree with Mike... for up close listening the LGKs are great, and although they have the ability to be used as mains in a small room setting, I prefer the X-LS for this application... they seem to fill the room better.

Both are excellent choices and very easy to drive. Let us know which once you choose.

Those guys pretty well nailed it.

For a mid sized room and standard listening distance the X-LS speakers are overall better for that application. But in a near field application you may really like the LGK's better.

X-LS's will play loud without issues while the LGK's are SPL limited.

I recently built both the X-LS Encore and the LGK and I would agree completely.

Really enjoying my LGK for near field, desktop use (and small room).

I'm getting along just fine without supplemental bass, but I like to have projects in the queue.  What's a good subwoofer to build?  In my case it would need to go under a large desk due to space constraints.

or more details on that.

Thanks
Neil

eHey Neil
I don't  know if anyone has built one yet,  thought maybe BK wanted to be the first
Seriously, there is the 4 ohm version being offered on the Rythmik site so  I'd imagine in a samll room  paired with the LGK's,  it should work very well
Danny or Brian  (or anyone else for that matter) have  you guys tried a single 8" in a small room  ?

A couple more ?'s about the 8' drivers...
I assume 3 of the 16FR model in parallel can be run off one  HX300 amp ?
How would  3 of them compare  to  a pair of  12's ?

I am  still  kicking aorund ideas of what I am  going to pair with my OB7's but I am probably only going to be able to start with a single H frame and add a 2nd later.

I haven't tried one in a small room. My room is big. And Brian has the lower Q versions. I just have the 16FR versions here.

Yes.

A little tighter and more controlled, but won't play as low or as loud down low.

Will the 12's handle the 200Hz crossover point of the MMTMM?  I notice the A370PEQ amp's crossover only goes up to 120Hz while the HX300's crossover goes up to 200Hz.

Danny, what would you recommend for a 8" single sealed version?
Driver ??
Amp ??

Can you and would there be any advantage / disadvantage to a ported version?

Thanks

The 12's in an open baffle easily reach that level. In the Super-V and Super-7 designs the dial on the crossover has to be set in the 80 to 100Hz region for them to crossover (-6db down) in the 180 to 200Hz range.

Hey Neil,

Brian's DS800-3: http://www.rythmikaudio.com/DS800drivers.html

And the HX300 amp: http://www.rythmikaudio.com/compact_amplifiers.html

No advantage in porting it.
