I changed tube preamps (and nothing else) in my system and the Maggies became very bright.  Put the resistors on and it helped a lot.

What preamp caused them to become screechy? 
My Sonic Frontiers is way too bright with the ribbon Magnepans, it's fine with the 1.7s.

It's been so long I don't remember but the product manual shows only a spot for resistors for the ribbons.

For what it's worth, I always install my resistors in the junk drawer.
