I'm interested.....

Not too much to report since the jam at my place:

1. had the latest SOCS software loaded on the P1A

2. tweaked my Meedio jukebox and ripped a few hundred gigs of flac
   * select songs in play list mode
    * view album covers, title, year and review as the songs sequence
    * home theater remote controlled
    * listening to it now while I write this on the HTPC from my Media Center wireless keyboard.

3. HTPC is in closet and cables through wall - SILENT!!!

I'm interested in taking the system up a notch in sound...candidates:
a.  Gary's pre-amp sure was sweat in my system...but the CFO might have concern on that level of expense
b.  loved the DAC 60 and more within budget
c. maybe a sub?
d. still need to do some room treatment
e. other?

OK, so there is an end to any confusion -

When we (son in law Andy and me) were at Marv's in January I mentoned that I would be visiting in May with no date fixed, and it would be great if a jam coincided.

My visit is set for arriving DFW Friday evening, and bingo Ken kicked off this thread, and as newcomers it would be nice for us if we could host our first jam.

Our initial proposal is for Monday May 1st (give us chance to unpack the cases) at Keller.

EDIT

Seems the confusion was mine Monday May 1st isn't a holiday Doh!

The house is the home of my daughter and aforesaid son in law Andy, and doesn't have a dedicated listening room. In fact Andy is fairly new to decent audio but we have assembled  quite a nice starter system with

Red Wine Clari-T
Omega Super 3s
Squeeze Box3 (as source) with (as yet uninstalled) linear ps.

We are still experimenting with cables (does it ever stop) and I have just bought a modded SB3 with digital out only which hasn't even landed yet(but will).

From the UK I will bring my RWA modded iPod (which we had at Marv's and is proving to be a very pleasing source using lossless files)) and an old (but not to big or heavy) dac, so that I can try out the new SB3.

I have contacted Danny about the possibility of buying a Dac 60 to bring home with me, but that may not be possible due to stock shortages.

So, we would like to share your company, your music, and your audio wisdom (and if you have components that can be moved with out risk, your stuff!)

Andy has a games room with modest HT, xbox, football table and stuff so if we need relief from the music it is available.

It's in Keller

EDIT
So it aint Monday....

We are English (who said  divided by a common language lol)

EDIT

This weekend is short notice all round I guess but we could perhaps do Sunday (not Saturday - sorry Marv)

It may be possible Sunday May 14th, I have asked Andy and will post again as soon as I hear back from him.

Will send directions by PM or email as preferred.

Hope you can make it.

OK, I got approval!

A new proposal for Sunday May 14th in Keller.

Who is free and up for it?

Marve, Brian you have PMs

Gary might you have the DAC 60 available by then?

At least it gives me some more time for playing around with speaker positioning and stuff.

Sorry I was such a dough ball.....

Hi Jim.

Yes, I think I can make a jam on Sunday, May 14th.  (Which is to say that I'll be in town and don't know of any conflicts at this point.)

In terms of possibly interesting contributions, I can bring my BPT power conditioner and some Gregg Straley speaker cables.  Let me know if you have any interest in either one.

Do you need email addresses in order to send out your address and timing info?  (I wouldn't recommend posting it on a public forum.)

Thanks to you and Andy for the offer to host!

I believe that school will be in intercession at that time as graduation is May 13th here at Midwestern State University (our graduation speaker is Chuck Norris, in spring it was the Texas Lt. Governor).  I *should* be able to make it and if Danny reminds me I'll bring my DAC 72 (a step down from the DAC 60).

Last post from UK for now...

Brian,

Power conditioning especially and speaker cables can be worked in.

Art,

Whether or not Garry has new stock it would be great to hear the SB3 through your Dac 60 - I guess the caps will be all burnt in and so on. Should be a treat.

Marv,

I'm counting on hearing your pre amp in front of the tripaths with the iMod as source, lots of buzz about tubes and tripaths on the circles.

Texasphile,

Hope you can join us, you / Brian / Andy can listen out for the treble and tell us oldies what you hear! Be pleased to audition your Lite Dac so long as you don't mind taking the risk of being envious of Art's modded Dac 60!

One thing I should mention - we don't have a cd transport so if anyone is counting on hearing their favourite cuts on cd we need either to rip them first or have someone bring a deck....

May get some more takers in the next 2 weeks eh?

Looking forward to it.

Jim

Done, but don't feel pressured to test the speaker cables.  It seems we'll have enough gear to test without expanding the list too much.  I just offered them in case there was interest.

When performing frequency sweeps on my brother's system over the holidays to examine room response, we informally tested the limits of our hearing.  I think we had the volume set around 75 dB, and I was still easily hearing the signal out past 17.5 kHz, but it dropped off in a hurry after that.  By the time we hit 18 kHz, I couldn't identify the signal reliably.  As congested as I am at the moment due to hayfever, I'm not sure I'd be as successful today, but I guess I should enjoy it while I have it!

(I do try to protect my hearing, such as wearing of earplugs when mowing and trimming the yard.)

I have heard on several occasions a Sonicraft modified DAC 60 in Danny Richie's system(s).  It beats mine hands down, but I'm happy with the DAC 72 since I don't have Danny's latest and greatest.  I'm holding out for a set of LS6 or LS9s since I positively coveted the LS Alphas.

If I can make it, I might consider bringing a Sony SCD777ES. I hear it 's supposed to make a killer transport and recently I did inherit someone else's Hand-me-down modded Analog card and Superclock I mod so it might make a decent standalone player.

We never did use this unit at the last jam (re: the Meitner was alleged to be able to beat the crap out of it) and I'd be curious to hear if a decent DAC would improve on it's CD performance (no doubt, SACD playback will blow away any CD playback with any DAC... :O) )

Dang player weighs 70 lbs so it'd better get used if I brought it over....

Also probably need to start bugging that Gary dude about when my new preamp will be ready....

Got the tourism out of the way now so looking forward to Sunday's jam.

So far as I can see we should be six or more.

We have a small map with directions which could be emailed or text only directions to send by pm - perhaps eveyone who is coming / hopes to come could indicate which they prefer either by pm or email to

jim@jimparkinsonltd.co.uk

Andy and I thought we may kick off before lunch (11.30 / 12.00) providing people can fulfill any Mother's Day obligations by then!

A quick "thank you" to Jim and Andy for hosting our micro-jam today.  The turnout was unexpectedly light, but we had fun nonetheless.  (Andy is going to have to drink all of that leftover beer by himself, the poor guy!)

The micro-jam was actually enjoyably laid-back, as we spent much of the time simply relaxing and listening to music.  I believe that Jim plans to start a separate thread with some comments on the various experiments we did manage to work in, but I will say that Andy's Omega Super 3's sounded really good powered by the either of the Red Wine Clari-T amps or the stock 30W TEAC amp - whether fronted by the Red Wine iMod, the stock Squeezebox, or the Red Wine modded Squeezebox.

Today was the first time I'd had a chance to really listen to a single driver speaker, and I was surprised and impressed with its abilities.  The $650 Omega Super 3, V2 strikes me as an incredible deal in a very easily placed package.  (It is a bit wide, but quite shallow with a forward firing port.)

Thanks again, guys!
