Personally, I'd never build a computer music server without a Paul Pang USB output card.  A very large portion of the magic comes from just it alone.

If you are only doing music i5 is overkill. I would look for the Nuc i3.

Fanless? Also, I think I was able to put together my CAPS for quite a bit less... assuming you don't need that extra horsepower.

I built mine for $370 which includes a $150 hard drive and 8GB of RAM, both of which I do not think are not part of the barebone systems linked to above. Mine is also totally silent with the SSD and fanless motherboard.

Of course, the one I built has a lowly Atom processor, but that is all the horsepower I need for an audio-only CAPS.

A dual core ATOM chip will do fine for audio unless you want to DSP or resampling on the fly. In that case you need the i5 or i7.
The downside to the NUC box is very limited expandability. For instance, if you want one of the upmarket USB cards designed for audio, you're out of luck, I think.

The PC in the link is also not fanless (active fan heatsink); the CAPS is.

Can you provide a link to them?

Thanks.

At least it's only $129 assuming it actually does something.

I wonder if Intel actually makes this,   I noticed HMDI 1.4 so whomever it is has the license  , well I guess they really do http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-kit-dc53427hye.html

I spoke to a Fry's salesperson today about these units.  He said you need to add memory, a SATA drive, and an operating system software to these units.  That would add $300 - 500 or more if true.  Can anyone confirm whether that's the case?

That is the definition of "barebones". Yes.
