Just stumbled onto this and thought I'd pass on a quick note. Both units can potentially give you some gain - +6db gain was optionally implemented on older TVC units (depending on the build) and it is always included as part of the design on TAP-X (and AVC-1) units - both of which use the AVC's in them.
Most of the older TVC based units had a manual switch to kick gain up 6db. The newer AVC based units seamlessly start adding gain as you turn the volume up past unity gain - up to a max gain of +7db. I wanted them to be 'one louder'.......
