Need advice for battery for Dodd EL-84 amp
« on: 24 Oct 2013, 04:03 pm »
I just purchased a used Dodd Audio EL-84 stereo amp, 15 watts,  and am unsure about what type of 12V battery to purchase to power it.  I have used a small 12V SLA battery to power a DAC, but this probably requires something a little heftier.  Any input is appreciated.

I'm sure you'll get some good input here, but I suggest calling Gary Dodd. He will give you the best advice on using SLA 12 Volts to maximize the run time on your amp.

Hi, Glynn.  I'm looking at the same amp.

Do you have any thoughts on the one you're now listening to?

Thanks.

Power Sonic was what I was suggested and purchased..  100 AmpH battery.  I think it is the one Danny was using at RMAF.  You may not need one that big, depending on your usage.

Some starting points

Get the good charger too.  7000 series.

I got this one.. http://www.batteryplex.com/powersonic.cfm/m/PS-121000

I only have a Dodd Pre and Dac on the battery.  I have left the charger off for two weeks at times depending on use.  Little draw from these devices, amps different of course..

The PowerSonic 100Ah battery was giving about 8-9 hours of playtime before it started to sag at RMAF with the Dodd Audio EL84 30 watt monoblocks.

Was the battery on a constant charge?

No.  Recharge at the end of the day.

I wanted to see if there was a difference, so I unplug it once in awhile.  JP

Thanks for all the help.  I bought a 75aH SLA battery and a Ctek 7002 charger, after talking with Gary Dodd.  On this amp the battery charge lasts all day easily and I recharge at night.
