I'm using JRiver on my Windows 8 music server but also have Foobar (which is free).  JRiver is more user friendly to a non-computer geek and I have not as yet figured how to do DSD files with Foobar (but can do hi-rez PCM from them) and it sounds good.  With JRiver and a tablet or smartphone you can also get the jRemote App for $10 and use it as a selection device.

Thanks,

FOOBAR, is good and free, as you said and as I've heard.  Can it play from a music folder or do I have to select songs individually?

What type of files do you want to playback?

What are you hooking this device up to?

Well, it's going to be on an ASUS laptop, which will connect to a 3TB External HD...
Will be playing FLAC, Lossless, etc.  NO DSD.

Foobar2000 will play an entire music folder or individual files.  Usually I setup the recordings by a folder with full CD's files in them with the folder name of the CD.  If you then click on the CD name and send it to the playlist it will play the entire CD.

For PhilA, to use Foobar2000 for Native DSD files, you need to change the output components.  There was supposed to be an upgrade awhile back to the DSD output components to make them work correctly.

Rich - have not gotten to it yet.  I spent most of the long weekend sitting down in front of the PC - bought dBpoweramp and began ripping my CDs (I had pieces previously done in WMA but decided to try to get as many ripped as I can as I still have classical DSD files to extract and DVD-As to rip) and that's what I'm doing right now (so hopefully less to do after the move).

I read that this what I need to do:

Go to File > Preferences > Output and Select foo_dsd_asio
Go to Tools >SACD> Asio Driver Mode and select 'DSD'
Click 'Apply' and 'OK' and 'OK'

If I don't get to it on my many things to do, we can do it in September.  Been breaking in the WyWires USB cable too that I now have on the MS-2  Only about halfway through the CDs.  Making back-ups of the back-ups after this effort.

Once you know how to use Foobar, its a powerful music player with lots of features. Even the GUI can be fully customized.

I guess I need to read the manual or go on "help" function?
Also, Figured out the Library thing, how do you get it to display album art, etc?

I use Jriver MC 18 on Windows 8. It works fine so far.

It can also be used with a touch screen in its 'Theatre View' although I prefer the normal layout and use a touchpad to navigate.

Sonny - A Member here (Fork) also is a dealer for selected items (I've gotten some fuses and tubes) and has a short guide.  I have not used anything from it - http://www.jaguaraudiodesign.com/blog/?s=foobar

How do I go about getting FOOBAR to show the album art?

Foobar skins - http://customize.org/foobar/skins

I just setup the Neutron one on my work PC. Still trying to figure out a few things but I do like the layout.
