Suggestions for Surrounds for SCST?
« on: 6 Apr 2013, 05:47 pm »
Originally I was going to buy songtowers, with songcenter, and a couple sets of surround 1's.  However since this will likely be the speakers I will have to live with for a long, long, long time I have decided to sink the budget into the LCR and get the Supercharged versions of the Songtower and Songcenter.  I figure I could always upgrade the surrounds later to the surround 1's.  As such I do not have much that I can spend on surround speakers.  I have heard that NHT Superzero 2's at $99 each could work well.  Anything else I should look at?  For reference the speakers will go in a room where the back surrounds will be about 15 foot from the front row of seats and about 11 foot from the 2nd row of seats.  I also have to be able to wall mount the speakers as the wife will not allow them to be on floor stands.

I am using my SCST mains with Martin Logan EM-C2 center and EM-FX2 surrounds and am very happy with the setup.  The voicing of the speakers seems to blend very well.  The FX2s are wall-mounted as you specified.  I also found mine used, but they were still a bit more than the superzeros.

My NHT SB1 bookshelf speakers worked great as surrounds with my HT2-TLs.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend NHT for surrounds until you can upgrade to "matching"  surrounds.  As a matter of fact, my NHT AudioCenter 2 center channel also worked great with my Salks.

Just a bit more....

I would like to jump up to that category of surround but the budget just won't push it.  We are finishing the whole basement, and since I am getting family to provide labor (except for carpet), my home theater budget is as much as the whole rest of the basement.....including a built in office.  I had to cut the budget for surrounds way back to make it work.  I am resisting the temptation to go overboard on a custom veneer since that would make me drop some other component out.  We already have a 14 foot shuffleboard made from locally sourced Michigan hard maple with a chestnut finish (something about the craftsmen out there in Michigan seems to draw me in).   Jim said he should be able to dye match it so I think I am going to try to stick to that instead of introducing even more different wood tones to the room.....however that temptation is still nagging me.

Thanks for the good words about the NHT.  A friend has the original superzeros for surrounds and I thought they worked out well in his system.  I also messaged Dennis Murphy about the new Superzero 2's and he thought they should work out great.  Said they were very neutral.  I think I will give it a shot.
