Looking for a 24/96+ analog to digital converter
« on: 17 Jan 2013, 01:27 am »
I can find a shed load of 16/44 or 48 converters like this:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221039165326?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

But no one seems to make converters that will do 24/96 or 24/192 or 24/196 to coax or toslink?

I want to use it to get my record player hooked into my Matrix mini I digital dac with some level of quality...

I picked up a http://www.creative.com/emu/products/product.aspx?pid=15185 for $100 on craigslist and besides being a pretty good DAC, I also use it to rip my vinyl to my hard drive. From what I understand, ripping at 24/192 doesn't bring anything extra to the table other than allowing to process in 24/192 and not lose as many bits in volume control. You will then convert to 16/44 when you send to flac to your digital file. It works pretty well for me.

Good luck,

Harold :)

You're right.  Those who would convert their analog phono to digital almost always do it to record to a digital file, hence the USB computer connection, but very few would convert it to digital and back to analog just for playback purposes.

There are a few home studio USB Audio Interfaces with 24/96 or 24/192 ADCs that have (a) RCA analog inputs (b) coaxial S/PDIF output and (c) an external DC power supply (so as not to require USB power).

One of them is the Phonic Firefly 302 USB ($150) and there may be others with these features. *

I am told these would work with a stereo analog input and digital S/PDIF output without connection to a computer by a Musicians Friend associate, but I would double check with the manufacturer.

* The E-Mu 0404 USB that Harold referenced above looks like another one that would work.  It offers both Toslink and Coaxial S/PDIF, but would require 1/4" > RCA adapters or cables for input into the combo Mic/Line inputs as well as physical connection from both the front and rear of the unit.

I should note that i dont want a USB interface as they always require a computer to function.

I'm just trying to get my record player to hook into my digital system :-\  cheaply

The 16/48 converters are probably fine but i thought i'd at least try to find a nice 24/96 or better one since the matrix dac supports this.

the firefly above would probably do it but costs a little more than i'd like.... :)

As I said in my reply, according to the studio guys at Musicians Friend, they can operate without a computer for your application.  But as I also said, I would verify with the manufacturer before I purchased one.

Here is a quote from page 19 of the EMU 404 USB owner's manual

"S/PDIF to Analog / Analog to S/PDIF converter
The 0404 USB can be also used as a standalone S/PDIF -> Analog or Analog ->
S/PDIF converter.
Analog Input to S/PDIF: Attach analog device to Dock A/B (Left/Right); enable
direct monitoring (set to S/PDIF). Analog input will be mirrored to S/PDIF out.
S/PDIF to Analog: Attach a S/PDIF source, power cycle the device, and set direct
to main"

I haven't used it for this purpose before so I can't vouch for it. The manual can be
downloaded from http://support.creative.com/manuals/download.aspx?nDownloadId=11592&prodName=0404 USB EN

True that, I failed to mention that. Not much of a concern for me since it is priced so right.

the usb section of the firefly would require a computer but i could probably use the spdif section instead much like the creative device can. (id need to double check tho.)

however both are 150$+ and i hoped to spend less ;-)

No, that is a DAC - Digital to Analog Converter, not an ADC - Analog to Digital Converter.

Unfortunately that seems to be the spread between the home studio devices and the cheapo 16/48 device, but there is a new Firefly listed on eBay for Buy It Now $110 shipped, if that helps.

It looks like the first link is for one that is $59.99 and can do D/A or A/D at 24/96 and the second one is 48.  I guess you can call to verify

I guess you can look to see if the manufacturer (Stellar) has distributors outside the US.  I know that Amazon sells some of the products from MCM so you may wish to look at your local Amazon website.

I have bought stuff from MCM and I live in Canada so it is most likely the manufacturer who doesn't allow them to sell outside the US.  You must have a local distributor (who will no doubt charge you more than MCM).

Looks like Amazon UK has the stuff? http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_11/279-4229823-0455839?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=analog+to+digital+converter&sprefix=analog+to+d%2Caps%2C271
