I ran into that with this batch of cabinets too. I went around the port tube with some layers of electrical tape until it made a snug fit then glued it in with Silicone.

I found a neoprene mousepad that's just the right thickness.  I can cut a strip and glue it to the entire circumference of the enclosure port thru-hole to make a good fit with the tube.  Any reason not to do that vs. a more rigid method like wrapping electrical tape around the tube to build up the OD?

Mike - I like the Spax screw idea.  Too bad I haven't saved all the ones I've pulled out of my car tires over the years!

I went with Danny's electrical tape idea after all - simpler and very sturdy.  Glued the tubes in with some black RTV I had on hand.

#6x1" SPAX screws worked awesome to secure the PCB.  Still a bit of a chore to get to the rear ones and provide the necessary downward force, but no pain no gain.  Thanks for the tip Mike!

Getting closer!

I find a flexible screwdriver makes getting to the rear screws fairly easy. I go through the port hole when there is one since I tend to use the Electra Tube Connectors but the binding post cup opening on your cabinets might be easier.

For $15 It's been worth it to me.

What's RTV? It being black will make it disappear inbetween the mounting frame and the enclosure, even if a little squirts out. Just let it dry and cut it, right?

RTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanizing (but of course regular silicone also vulcanizes at room temperature).  RTV is more chemical and heat resistant than regular silicone, which is why it is used in automotive, marine and aircraft applications.

RTV is mildly corrosive and should not be used to anchor crossover or other electrical components.

The blue RTV is used for gasketing applications as opposed to the more adhesive black RTV.

Wrapped up the build this afternoon.

Danny, I was short one torx screw for the woofer.  Can you send me one for a matching set?

Sounding really good!!!!!!  I mean, really good, and this is just my break-in setup.  Bass is surprisingly strong for such a small box.

Dang it. Are you serious. I always try to drop in an extra one or two just in case the customer loses one.  And I still shorted you?  :duh:

Thanks, guys.  I listened for 12hrs non-stop, then I had to transfer them to my brother for transport to our dad as a Christmas gift.  My brother got a chance to burn them in for another day or so and had favorable initial reports.

I didn't want to bias the upcoming listeners with my impressions, and I also wanted to wait and see how they sounded in their final home with a different chain of gear, but I think they might benefit from some poly fill to tighten up the lower frequencies.  Currently I just have No-Rez in there.  Part of the beauty of DIY is the ability to fine tune to taste!

As good as the bed liner looks initially, it's a bit susceptible to scuffs.  Developed some minor rub marks against cardboard during car transport.  No big deal, but in retrospect I should have fully wrapped them in towels or similar.  Just something to point out if someone else uses the identical product.  I might try and knock down the overall roughness a bit with careful use of an abrasive pad - bottom will be a good test area.

Happy new year everyone!

So today I visited the recipient of these new speakers and did the final positioning and integration.  Wow, these are awesome.  I think awestruck is a good description.  They are in an odd location in an architecturally odd room, but somehow it just works exceptionally well.  We tossed out the junk that was there previously.  New sense of music appreciation in this particular household, and in a big way.  If only I could get my own listening room to sound this good!  I'm not going to mess with the poly fill.  Oh, by the way I was treated to a home cooked lobster and fillet mignon dinner.   :thumb:

Thanks Danny for a great product and everyone else for the good input.
