Record Lamp: Halogen or LED?
« on: 18 Mar 2012, 04:21 pm »
Typical vinylhead question...Audio Advisor has a reduced price on the Littlite 18" Halogen lamp but they also sell an LED lamp from the same manufacturer. Both have dimmers (bad for sound systems, no?).

Would probably turn the light off when not cueing up a record, but are there important differences between the two types of bulb?

If you use a strobe disc to set your speed, you'll need to use a halogen bulb (IIRC). The strobe relies on the 60hz pulse in order to be visible to the eye. I don't think it shows up with an LED. I could be wrong though.

All of the prices for a record lamp seem mighty high on Audio Advisor. I would imagine a much cheaper alternative would be not too hard to find. Maybe something battery powered?

The halogen might be a warmer color but the LED version has the advantage of not needing bulb replacements.  I don't think the dimmer will be a noise issue due to the low power of these lights.  If it is you'll know it immediately from the audible buzz coming from your speakers.  :o

Scott F.,
You are thinking of a light source to check the table's speed accuracy.  That would be a fluorescent bulb, I use a small automotive drop light with my strobe reference disc.  :thumb:

Turntables that have a ready built in light for strobe - speed adjustment, use a neon bulb.

The typical dimmer, for whatever incandescent bulb, creates a lot of noise on the AC line unless it is heavily filtered.

Since an LED runs off of DC, I would think that any dimmer for an LED would already be isolated from the AC line. Hopefully no dimmer noise back on the AC line with an LED light.

Paul I was checking them out after I saw your thread and I would get the LED one only because you can pick a couple colors of light and it has the base.
I have no other reason-the red light might be cool

Thanks for the replies. Anybody have a favorite "DJ" style lamp they use, something I can source myself? And BTW, would not use it to speed check with a strobe.

Something like this inexpensive Ikea led task light would fill the bill nicely: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70180955/

I use this IKEA Jansko and it works great. Nice heavy base and long flex neck. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20169658/

I'm using the clip on version of this lamp for my vinyl inspection rig

Very effective  :thumb:

Plenty of light and it doesn't get too hot

TomS desk lamp version looks a lot neater though  8)

I would dbk-ck with audio advisor. When I bought my littlite, I opted for the halogen as I wanted a dimmer. For the LED, one gets an on-off switch. I'm not sure they offer a dimmer for LEDs.

The LED version offers a choice of white, red or white+red LEDs, so I'm guessing there is a 3-way switch in the base.

Lot of battery powered LED lights available out there. Maybe I finally have a way to try out the benefits of a battery-powered component in my system :thumb:

A good point with battery use....are the wall warts supplied by the Littlelite going to cause a buzz in your system? There is a transformer in there afterall, and with only 6 feet of cord, could be a concern?

Yep! A compact 3W version - am sure it'd be a similar thing over the pond.

This is the one I use. It makes no noise at all in my system. Go to Littlelite for info.
