Great idea for a topic DaveNote  :thumb:

My makeover required a little over one year to complete and occurred in the order listed below...

KEF Q1 Bookshelf speakers > JBL 1400 Project Arrays
Marantz SR-19 receiver      > 28B SST²/BP 26
Marantz CC-38 CD player    > Esoteric X-05

The biggest change was definitely the addition of the 28B SST² amplifiers, but this is not really a fair comparison at all. The JBLs was also a huge change, but the SR-19 was not capable of driving them - needless to say that the addition of the 28s certainly "woke" them up. My former system sounded great but it is most certainly a night and day difference.

Be well...

The 28BSST2s are my dream amp!

Most recently, the Bryston SC4 speaker cable. The difference is not subtle with the 4BSST amp!

Hi Dave,

I'm curious what you were using before you switched to the Bryston SC's.

Biggest for me is speakers.

I can swap in and out other pieces and note minor differences.  One amp is "warmer" than the other for instance (Bryston vs Hafler).

There is, to me, a much greater difference when I swap speakers (Allison, IMF, Harbeth, PMC).

- speakers first
- the BP26 was (and is) a stunning experience!!!
- BCD-1 clearly shows that a cd can have timing & rhythm :green:
- BDP-1 clearly shows that files can have timing & rhythm :green:
- 4B SST and then...bass!punch!!bass!!!
- BP 1.5 outperformed Clearaudio's Smartphono

al.

p.s.: upgrade was from a Pioneer VSX AX 4 AVi receiver.

Swapping a highly regarded Japanese Integrated amp for a pre-amp/amp combo, where the amp is a Bryston 4B-ST made a stunning change in my system.

Everything else about my system was the same.

The pre-amp is a Parasound PH-850.

I also listened to the Parasound pre-amp with a Parasound power amp (didn't care for it, at all) and an Adcom GFA-5500 (I think).

The 4B-ST was, by far, the best and it wasn't even close.

I'd much rather have a Bryston pre-amp, but it's not in my budget, at the moment, while I'm putting kids through college.

Twelve years ago, after extensive auditioning at several dealers, I sold my NHT 3.3s and bought a pair of Revel Ultima Studios. It was a very exciting change -- until I got them home, and they sounded an awful lot like the old speakers.

Then, I had ASC draw up an acoustic plan for my room, and I installed the recommended traps and panels. When I was done, it was great! THAT was the biggest improvement I've made to my system, in 45 yrs of audiophilia. I wound up spending half as much again on acoustics as I did on the (rather costly) speakers, but it was worth it.  From organ music to harpsichord, it all sounded better, clearer, more dynamic, less irritating, less electronic, more natural.

The second-biggest change -- but still VERY significant -- was trading in my c-j MF-2300 amp for a 14B-SST. Clearer sound throughout the spectrum, and FAR better bass. I remember dancing to Bob Marley when we first plugged it in. Wow!

Ordinary Belden 10 gauge. I was convinced that this was more than enough for my system. Man, was I wrong!
