Bryston SP1.7 Guidance
« on: 17 Mar 2012, 05:14 pm »
Hello-

Next week I’ll be taking delivery of a pristine SP1.7.  I’ve searched for and read what I could find but I still have a few questions regarding the SP2 upgrade.  I should add that I’ll be using the SP1.7 for 2ch listening only.  Also, I’ve come across a link to a PDF on the  Bryston site but the file no longer exists there – if someone has it and could either post it or send it to me I would really appreciate it.

•   Can someone tell me what exactly is replaced in the upgrade and, since I’m daft about circuits, why and to what benefits?

•   Does the upgrade have any downside (feature and/or sonic losses)?

•   I won’t know what software is loaded in unit until I receive it, can someone tell me the latest SP1.7 version(s)?

$1,500 USD is more than I paid for the unit and a lot of money to me, so while I’m open to saving the cash for a future upgrade, I just want to be sure it’s money well spent.

Thanks for your time and help.

Chris

Hi Chris,

If you are using the 1.7 for analog 2-channel only the upgrade is not necessary.  It is only the digital board that gets the upgrade. The upgrade is around $1500 but check with Mike Pickett on that - mpickett@bryston.com.

Also check with Mike on the software but again if only using for analog 2 channel listening no need to be concerned.

Thanks for the quick reply James.  I see now I left out some critical information (swing-n-a-miss!).

I've two sources for 2ch... an Oppo BDP-95 and primarily a Mac Mini.  Both feed into a BDA-1... the Mini via Toslink to Opical Mini Plug and the BDP-95 via S/PDIF.  Vinyl has exited the Man Cave, via Stage Left.  So, the DAC portion of either the SP1.7/SP2 I should have beat.  I'm guessing the Bypass Mode is the best for 2ch, so does any of this change your diagnosis Doc?

If you are using the BDA then bypass is best and it is the same on the SP1 and the SP2.
