Furutech GT-40 perfomance for ripping vinyl
« on: 29 Dec 2011, 08:55 pm »
I currently have a Yamaha CDR-HD1300 that I can use to rip vinyl.  I am looking to move to a computer based solution.  The amount of information and options I have found is staggering.  The Furutech GT-40 seems to have the features I am looking for, but I am not sure how well the 24/96 recordings sound when ripping vinyl.

I have what I consider to be a high resolution system, so I am curious if the GT-40 is up to the task as a DAC/ADC.  I am a Windows guy since I have worked on that platform all of my career, but from what I have read the MAC with Pure Vinyl seems to be the best option.  I would stream and record via the USB to the GT-40.  How is the performance of the GT-40 as a DAC/ADC?  Does anyone have a sample needle drop I can hear?

Thanks,
Greg

I use Adobe Sound Booth and it makes for some outstanding 24/96 copies. It can be a bit tweaky but the end result is very nice. And I'm a PC.  :green:

The furutech is fantastic for ADC and definitely worth the investment. I sold mine though because I never actually got around to ripping any vinyl and I thought the DAC was its weak point (and it was not exactly fair to expect a $480 all-in-one device to serve as a DAC in my main system). I have a short sample that I did rip, email me if you'd like me to send it.

For software you might want to have a look at Reaper, very powerful and attractively priced for personal use. I use that along with a TC Electronic Impact Twin for digitizing vinyl (which I don't do a lot of) with good result.

Pure Vinyl and an Apogee Duet 2 is a very nice budget vinyl ripping setup.  Rob (Pure Vinyl/Pure Music Channel D founder) was using that at RMAF as his budget example, and it sounded great.

Thanks for all the replies.

I am a Windows guy but it seems like a MAC Mini with Pure Vinyl will be the best overall option from what I have read.

I am glad to hear that the Furutech did a good job with their ADC.  The Duet seems like it would be a good option if I use a MAC because it supports Firewire and 24/192.  The Furutech is appealing because for now I can use it with my Windows laptop with Audacity just to get my feet wet.

My bad, I just looked and the Duet is USB like the Furutech.  It says it supports 24/192 recording.  I am not sure if this would be a good DAC for streaming music to my stereo system.

If you go Duet, make sure it is the Duet Two (2).

I noticed that the original is 24/96 and the Duet 2 is 24/192.

Gary, I will send you an email to hear a sample recorded from the Furutech GT-40.
