Icon Amp
« on: 13 Feb 2012, 04:42 pm »
I'm considering the purchase of an Icon Amp http://www.nuforce.com/hp/products/iconamp/index.php for my desktop system. I do have two questions I hope someone has the answers to:

1. Does the current incarnation of the Icon cause speaker 'pop' when the unit is turned on? I intend to use 8ohm/90db sensitivity speakers.

2. Will I be able to hook the amp up to my subwoofer via the high level inout then out to my speakers via the high level output?

Thanks in advance.

Regarding the second question, I have been informed by NuForce that a subwoofer cannot be connected in this manner.

Would it work?  Probably yes, if you have an active subwoofer that can be connected to speaker-level outputs, and then connect your speakers to the woofer high-pass outputs.  I don't see how the ICON amp would even know the sub is there.

Now, the "original" ICON is a different beast, because it has internal equalization to match the S-1 speaker response curve.  But that's not the one in your link.

But  in any case, it's probably better to drive the subwoofer with line-level outputs from the source component, using a splitter, if necessary.  With a passive sub, of course, you would also need a power amp for the sub.
