V1 tweeter vs Super V tweeter
« on: 2 Jul 2011, 07:43 pm »
Both of these speakers use 12 inch midranges, but the V1 uses a one inch tweeter, and the Super V uses a 2 inch tweeter.  What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?  Seems like the 1 inch tweeter would beam less at very high frequencies, but on the other hand, it seems like the 2 inch tweeter would be able to cross over lower and have better dynamics and power handling.

Is that correct?  Are there any other considerations when deciding between the 2 kits?

Both cross at 1kHz and the off axis response follows the shape of the woofer cone. So they are about the same in that regard.

The Super-V tweeter just sounds better, period. The mid-range is better too. It is just a really high end driver with no real expense limitations on the design.

I think the the biggest difference is the Super V is machined (opened up) at the back of the tweeter housing creating a true point source OB dipole. the only one of its kind if I am correct. 8)

The V1's tweeter is opened in the back as well for true OB throughout the speakers range.

I'm curious as to why you use a conventional tweeter in the V series as opposed to the Neo planar tweeter. Was it merely the consideration of being able to use a coaxial driver?

Good to hear, they used to come with a rear firing dome tweeter. Open back is better.
