New soldering iron.
« on: 1 Mar 2011, 07:25 pm »
Is it worth the extra $ to get a soldering station for lead free solder? I'm considering this one.http://www.circuitspecialists.com/prod.itml/icOid/9752

or http://www.circuitspecialists.com/prod.itml/icOid/10359

I like the hot air option for SMD and specifically replacing op amps which in my DAC are very small and with very close quarters connections.

Thanks,

Roy

Those look cool.  One day i will upgrade my bottom rung station.  I just have not found the need.

Thanks for the link. I've been looking for a new iron. I bought a so so temp control unit to replace my (very old digital) Weller and am not satisfied at all. Since they went to the new environmentally safe solder (insert sarcasm here) I just can't get the temps constant enough. Any experience with these? I think I'll take the plunge - just curious.

They sell a very nice product.I have one of the now discontinued stations(2A) and like it a lot. I really like the first one that you linked.

I do think I'll go with the first one and continue to use mostly leaded solder. I especially  like the clamp that holds the hot air iron leaving your hands free to use tweezers or pliers to remove a tiny part.
