been lurking for awhile and looking for opinions on next system. a couple years ago my old technics  receiver was giving me problems and had been repaired a couple of times so it was time to replace. i had cerwin Vega at12s . i wound up buying a yamaha rxv2700 and orb satellite speakers and sub. to make a long story short i missed my floor standers even though the quality wasn't there. im now getting a chance as im about to set up a second system. it will be strictly 2 channel 2 speaker system with no sub. im leaning towards an integrated amp and single cd player.my plan was to pick up the amp now then begin my search for speakers. have looked at the nad and a couple others and would like something with at least 100 per channel. any opinions would be  appreciated

if you have efficient speakers (over 90db), just get a Bryston B60-R or if you really need more power get the Bryston B100. Bryston= 20 years warranty, best support, Quality, build like tanks, Excellent sound. Can brand X get all this? I doubt it!

Using bummrush's example (91 dB/w/m at 6 ohms) I'll convert to 90 dB/w/m at 8 ohms (where most amps are rated).  So in your room he'd need 100 watts (20 dB of gain) to reach 110 dB at your chair.

Hahaha    - 110dB in a home audio system - he won't need a decent system after the first hour or so as he'll have permanent hearing loss. Realistic volume in a room that size at the listening seat is nearer 93-94dB unless you are stone deaf. Dance clubs don't often exceed 106dB and that is LOUD.

Also, I've never hear of room loss. Rooms ADD to speaker gain. Expect about 2-3dB better than manufacturer spec if properly placed and 6-9dB if in corners.

If you run out of money, try the Music hall 50.2. Its 90wpc with MM/MC. I picked one up on a lark recently because they are closing out the older models and it is an impresssive and musical amp.  You can probably get one for the neighborhood of 600.00 Sound reminds me of NAD.

I'll agree with your MH recommendation. However, I had a MH A25.2 and a NAD C325BEE at the same time, and the MH was much better. The NAD sounded bloated in comparison. I suspect the MH A50.2 would be fabulous.

im pretty close to deciding on the speakers. going to wind up spending a little more than i wanted to on the speakers so going to have to spend less on the gear for now and can always do the upgrade thing later on . i dont want to buy used gear at this time and would like to keep the components the same brand as i dont know enough to mix and match.the speakers are 4 ohm load rated to 250 watts . i have been looking at emotiva  and nad. with the nad they have an integrated amp rated at 150 watts i think its the 375 model  and a cd player will put me in the same price range as a package from emotiva. since emotiva doesn't have an integrated  amp i would have to go with seperates with either 2 mono blocks or a single larger 2 channel amp.   i like the 5 year warranty on the emotiva and they put a combo price together for some nice savings . there is a local nad dealer near the house that i would use if i went that direction . any other suggestions would be appreciated. im trying to figure it all out as the room is getting close ( carpet was installed yesterday furniture coming next sat) and would like to pick out an audio rack as well to match and need to watch the dimensions and weight  capacity of the shelves  thanks

Emotiva offers great value for the stated specifications/features and build quality looks very good too.  But sound quality wise keep in mind that its "mid-fi", not an audiophile's destiny piece of gear.

Forgot to mention another good brand of electronics: the Aussie Redgum.  Its a bit pricey with the soft U.S. dollar, but the Chinese built Son of a Gun 60 wpc integrated uses their same design and offers better value with terrific sound.   :thumb:

So what speakers are you locking into?  One of the great confusions in audio is the synergy that pieces (amps to speakers is the prime example) either have (good) or not (bad).  Someone here should be able to steer you in the right direction.  And unfortunately there are pretty much no manufacturers that do both speakers and amps really well.   :(

I just added the Emotiva USP-1 and UPA-2 to my system. I've tried several integrateds over the last few years (Music Hall being the best of that bunch), but none put out the impact of the Emotiva. The USP-1 bass management works well in my 2.1 setup.

I have 4 ohm PSB Stratus Mini speakers, and the UPA-2 puts out plenty of juice for them.

im going to be ordering a pair of salk h2tls within a couple of weeks. im just finishing up the room. going to be spending more on the speakers than i thought so will have to start with a little less on the gear.also going to go with separates instead of the integrated amp. right now its either going to be the nad or the parasound so i can keep the costs down and can always get another amp to increase the power if needed. the nad is 150 watts at 4ohms and the parasound is 200 at the same.  theres a couple good deals online for both and ill give the local dealers a chance  to get close to the price if not ill buy and have shipped. i ordered a sanus rack for the gear that matches the room and should be here this week . once its here ill measure for cables. i can now see why this turns into an obsession im starting to see amps and pre amps in my sleep

I remember that Robert Harley said the Goldenote S-1 Signature (or was is S-3 Signature?!?!) was the best SS integrated he's heard for under $2K.  The review is somewhere on the net.  I haven't heard this amp personally but tend to trust Rob's ears more than many other reviewers.

Great choice on the speakers.  Have you looked at the Wyred 4 Sound Integrateds?

You can also consider the PI-160 (by burson) a powerful integrated amp.

Hi

Not sure how much you want to spend? This look like an interesting piece. Class D Micro Mega with onboard dac giving you airstream. Its about 5k brand new. Looks intersting, local dealer is bringing one in so i am going to give it a listen.

I'd suggest the Naim XS integrated or, if you wish to spend more, the Naim Supernait.  These amps can be found, at times, on Audiogon.
