Which AVA Preamp with Subwoofer connection?
« on: 8 Nov 2010, 04:52 am »
Looking for my first preamp and I apologize for being so ignorant and over looking
where this may have been covered, but....

Which of Frank's preamps can I use with my powered Hsu sub and my Sierra-1's
for 2.1?

Also, an added plus would be for HT by-pass to inlcude my Sierra surrounds for movies,
but I'm really concentrating on critical listening by streaming FLAC files from my
SB Touch through a used AVA DAC that I have enroute to me now.

Thanks in advance for everyone's tolerance of this old nubie.

Regards,
Ken

All Audio by Van Alstine preamplifiers built in our own chassis designs for the past many years have two sets of audio outputs and thus all provide sub-woofer drive connections.

Even our very old units built in Dyna and Hafler chassis in the 1980s or older can drive subwoofers with the addition of simple "Y" connectors available at Radio Shack or similar.

No issues driving sub-woofers with any AVA preamplfier.

I just did this with my PAT5-FETII and my newly acquired Hsu STF-2.  I listened to several bass heavy recordings and was surprised at how clean and well defined the bass was, and then I started to realize that there was no more "sound stage".  I listened to several more and tried to discern any degree of imaging or positioning of instruments to no avail.  Then I thought, "Hmm...  dual preamp outs, one pair to my Omega III 260, one pair into the y-connector and into the STF-2...  Could it be that simple?"

It could.  I turned the volume all the way down, unplugged the 2nd pair of preamp outs from the y-connector, turned the volume back up and whaddya know - I had STEREO again!  Hooked up the high level inputs on the Hsu sub to the B speaker posts on the back of the pre, and now I've got (to my ears) amazingly clean and detailed stereo (A speakers - pair of Hsu HB-1s) and amazingly clean and detailed stereo with clean and detailed bass (A+B speakers) that'll make my upstairs neighbor's cat run and hide.
