A good friend wanted good sound in her new apartment so I recommended the Audioengine A5, we set them up last night and she loves them. My friend's music is already on her Mac laptop so I plugged a used Squeezebox 3 into the A5's. This system is so simple and sounds great. The A5's are solid little speakers that put out room filling bass, highs are smooth and they are easy to listen too. A higher quality system is planned for the study/music room but for now this setup is perfect for the living/dining/kitchen area.

Audioengine A5 - $325 from AudioAdvisor
Squeezebox 3 - $165 used

Total $490 - definitely cheap and cheerful  :thumb:

The little wave guides in them are very effective in the sense that they do control direction of the high frequencies.  Outside of the sweet spot the top end is noticeably muted.

I haven't heard the AE2, but they are bumped up pretty hard around 100 Hz, so that's why I went with the AE5.  Another reason is the top input; I haven't used it much, however it sure comes in handy and is very convenient.
