Hello all,

I would like to try connecting my BP5 preamp to my 4B amp using the balanced connections, but the 4B uses a 1/4" male input.  It looks like I can buy a cable that has the 2 different connector styles (XLR to 1/4") but will using that make the connection unbalanced and no different than using the RCA style unblanced connections?  Hmmm..

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this....thanks!

We use a combination XLR - 1/4 inch input on the amps - unless it is a fairly old 4B.

Hi James,

I believe this is an older Pro model (serial # 48706), which only has a 1/4" male input, no XLR connection.  If I used a XLR to 1/4" cable, is that no longer a balanced connection?

Thanks

It will be balanced in on the 1/4 inch 'tip ring and sleeve'.

Excellent, thank you.  I'll track down those cables and give it a go.  I'll update later with a performance report lol!

I installed a pair of balanced cables yesterday and all seems well.  Possibly a slight improvement in noise reduction and dynamics, but will continue with careful listening test :)

Something that I have noticed since setting up this dedicated 2 ch system, is a slight buzz that is occuring from inside the cabinet of one of my Energy RC70's.  This is something that I have never heard before when this gear was used in my 5.1 system.  At first I thought I had a malfunction with my 4B amp, but by further diagnosing using an old-school Alpine Test Drive cd and it's low frequency test tones, I was able narrow the buss down to something vibrating at a particular frequency inside the cabinet.  Now to pull a few drivers out and fix it lol!
