Not impossible - it can be done.  But AFAIK, it isn't common.   The bias tone is read off the tape and used as a reference to correct wow and flutter in the digital domain.   I've heard it done, and it's quite remarkable.

When I was a kid, I belonged to the Columbia Record Club. Nothing remarkable about that, only I didn't get records. Instead, I got reel to reel tapes. Most of the tapes, especially the Columbia releases, had stickers on that said, Master Tape Duplication. They were regular albums on 7" reels 1/4 track. The sound was remarkable. I guess it was not as good as the actual master, but still pretty good.

I remember when the first CD players came out, and how bad it sounded. I think much of the improvement is from engineers adapting to new recording techniques. Getting a DA converter helped a lot, so I can listen to CDs now on my "better" system. I'm not really anti-digital. I think some day it will overtake analogue. Point is, I can see the potential that the Emerald system has or can have. I've only heard a couple of systems that were astoundingly real sounding. They did cost considerably more than the Emeralds. But amps are not included. Hard to fathom how the quality of the amp is less important?

Maybe some day I'll hear what can be done with dynamic drivers in this speaker. The great ones I had or remember, had electrostatic mids, ribbon tweeters, and servo controlled dynamic woofers.
