VERY HOT Brystons
« on: 22 Apr 2010, 03:28 am »
True story: My brother-in-law's a nuclear engineer at the Chalk River nuclear facilty and he may have been pulling my leg, but as a category, these guys are not that whimsical. Anyhow, upon inspecting my Bryston gear he remarked that they used some at the plant. I'm not sure what for, however, he did indicate that there's a particular disposal protocol for old equipment that might be, can I say, hot in more ways than one, stringent safeguard being what they are. Mortified as he mentioned some Bryston gear being plowed into a secure landfill, I told him that I really really didn't mind if they were just, you know, a little bit radioactive, as my wife probably is too. Alas, he didn't bite, just grinned knowingly...

It would be interesting to find out where exactly the equipment was being used and for what purpose, such that it was contaminated or activated, the latter being unlikely!

I suspect that even cafeteria equipment from the plant ends up there due to stringent safety protocols.

It will be interesting to see if they restart Mo-99 production this spring.

Someone should dig out one and send it to Stereophile for review. I'm sure they will hear and report an "enveloping glow around each floating note".

I believe the Stradivarius was made from wood floating in the canals of Venice, so there might be something there.
