Multimeter Suggestions
« on: 4 Jun 2010, 07:53 pm »
Hi all!

I was wondering if I could get some solid suggestions on the purchase of a digital multimeter - I am the proud new owner of a Will Vincent rebuild - Dynaco ST-70.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I have 2 Velleman meters, model No. DVM850BL that are about $20. If you need something faster, get a Tripplett.

Don't spend a ton of money,$20.00-$25.00 at RadioShack will buy a DMM that will last for years.Just my opinion.

I got mine at Sears about 20 years ago and it's never given me any problems.  I was told it's a Fluke knock-off but can't say for sure.

I used to do A/V wiring, and the company I worked for had all Flukes. I've had my Fluke 75 for about 23 years and it still works perfectly.

Any photo?? You mean said it was a Fluke sale??
Mine is a cheap Minipa ET1501 made in Brazil, near 15 years old already.

I meant that it was very similar to a Fluke meter (not produced by Fluke, just modeled after the Flukes).
The model number is Sears 82417.
This one's not mine but is the same thing.  What he's got plugged in the probe holes is anyone's guess.

A different thread here at AC recommended this unit, which was for sale at less than $20 when I bought it.

But looks like $30 now, and out of stock.

Hey!

Are you going to use it for just biasing the amp? If so than those that have been suggested would do fine. :D

But if you are planning to do more than that than you might want to invest a bit more for a good one.

   Personally I own a Fluke 179....

So far I really like my Fluke 179. Great DMM and worth the $ I spent :D

Take care,

I just use a cheap craftsman. I think it was around $20.

We used flukes at school, and they were really nice, but personally, I wouldn't spend the money unless it was going to be used daily.

Yeah, if you could afford to buy those LAMM than I don't think you will have problem affording the Fluke he recommended

IF I could afford the ML3 I would never buy this amp, it do not have nor solid wiring, it use circuits boards all the way.  I sorry LAMM and BAT do not use hard wiring.
But the Fluke I recommend, it is expensive but it is well done and reliable.

I have a Fluke 87 III that I have used more than 10 years.  Excellent and dependable multimeter.

Hi,
Seems licensing technology is a very common practice in these metters, here in Brazil Icel and Minipa brands even have some models that use the same box/chassis look as the Fluke.
Fortunately these cheap meters work very well.

Wow - thank you all for the wonderful suggestions!

I probably will go on the cheap side since I will only use this multimeter for biasing my amp.
